Offer description

The Company

Join an established and respected Natural Resource Management (NRM) organisation making a tangible difference across North Queensland. With long-standing projects, stable funding, and a passionate, experienced team, this organisation partners with landholders, Traditional Owners and local communities to manage land and water more sustainably and support positive environmental outcomes.

Based in Townsville, the organisation is investing in refreshed digital channels and a stronger focus on showcasing the on-ground impact of its projects.

Importantly, this is a place that genuinely reinvests in its people, building capability, embracing flexibility, and giving communicators ownership to do their best work.

The Role

This is a hands-on Communications Officer role designed as a true next step, not entry-level and not a manager role, but a position where you'll own outcomes and stretch your skills. Reporting to a Senior Communications Officer and working closely with Project Managers, you'll lead comms for a number of projects once up and running, shaping plans, gathering stories in the field, and delivering multi-channel content that reaches landholders, partners and funders. You'll be trusted with autonomy to plan and produce, supported by a collaborative, seasoned team.

Key Responsibilities

* Work with Project Managers to plan and deliver project comms: story pipelines, timelines, and channel mix.
* Generate content – interviews, case studies, media releases, fact sheets, flyers, web/news updates, socials, photography, and short-form video.
* Maintain positive relationships with media and communications teams to support coverage of projects and events.
* Cover workshops, field days and site visits; capture imagery and quotes; facilitate media onsite when required.
* Maintain comms assets (e.g. image library) and contribute to internal and corporate communications efforts, such as newsletters.
* Build respectful relationships with external stakeholders (graziers, farmers, Traditional Owners, other partners), and internal stakeholders (project teams and other colleagues).

About You

* An excellent writer and interviewer who can spot a story and turn it quickly into engaging content across multiple channels.
* 3+ years in communications, PR, or journalism, confident working to a brief and owning outcomes.
* Comfortable in the field – you can build rapport, run interviews, and capture strong photos/video, even in pressure situations, for example at an event when time is short and you need to forcefully yet respectfully corral people together.
* Proactive, organised and resilient: you'll work with busy project teams, prioritise under pressure and keep things moving.
* A people person who engages respectfully with diverse stakeholders and represents the organisation professionally.
* Current 'C' class licence; willing to travel regionally (regular day trips and approximately 1–2 overnight trips most months).

The Benefits

* $83k – $105k base salary + 15% superannuation.
* 5 weeks annual leave.
* Professional development: up to 5% of base salary for PD (courses, conferences, memberships).
* Flexibility: family-friendly culture, potential for 1 WFH day/week post-probation, flexible start/finish, and TOIL for fieldwork or events.
* Autonomy and ownership: lead comms efforts for some projects once you are up and running.
* Positive, purpose-driven storytelling with visible on-ground results – not crisis comms.
* Supportive, long-tenured team that invests in your growth and celebrates wins.
* Townsville-based role with fantastic opportunities to visit and experience a diversity of North Queensland's landscapes.
