ABOUT THE ROLE
A leading government department is seeking a Senior Satellite Communications Engineer to join their Telecommunications and Data Centre Support team. The role is critical to delivering a multi-year Satellite Modernisation Project, focused on upgrading and future-proofing satellite communications infrastructure across global Posts. You will work on both legacy Geostationary Orbit (GEO) systems and emerging Non-Geostationary Orbit (NGSO) technologies, supporting design, deployment, and maintenance of high-performance satellite communication systems.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Design, implement, and maintain satellite communication systems, including GEO and NGSO infrastructure.
* Contribute to high-level technical design and investigations, and support deployment of satellite terminals across remote and regional locations.
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including architecture, cyber assurance, and regional technical officers, to ensure secure and resilient satellite communications.
* Produce high-quality technical documentation, including designs and maintenance plans.
* Travel to geographically dispersed locations as required for system deployment, maintenance, and support activities.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
* 5+ years' experience in satellite communications engineering (GEO and NGSO systems).
* Strong understanding of RF and microwave communication systems, including design, testing, and optimisation.
* Experience planning and implementing high-availability WAN services, including satellite-based connectivity solutions.
* Ability to produce technical documentation and high-level designs.
* Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience working in cross-functional and geographically distributed teams.
* Desirable: Experience supporting government or defence satellite communications projects.
* Desirable: Ability to mentor or provide guidance to junior engineers or field technicians.
* Qualifications: Bachelor or Diploma in Electronics and/or Communications Engineering.
ELIGIBILITY
* Must hold or be able to obtain NV2 security clearance.
* Australian citizen preferred.
* Willingness to travel regularly to remote and international locations.
