Performs clinical and research diagnostic and therapeutic molecular imaging protocols, inclusive of single photon and PET. The technologist will perform Computed Tomography (Atenuation Correction and/or Diagnostic) as ordered in conjunction with SPECT/PET exams. Completes testing for both in and outpatients within various hospital locations. Observes radiation safety techniques (ALARA), including use of protective shielding and handling and disposal of radiopharmaceuticals. Takes appropriate precautions to minimize exposure to infectious, radioactive, or biohazard agents. Follows Institutional/Departmental guidelines for patient safety and patient care. On-call responsibilities as assigned and remains flexible in all shift coverage and overtime situations as necessary. Assists in on-the-job training of new hires and students.
Responsibilities include:
1. Screen for appropriate indications and contraindications. Ensure the correct protocol and prescribed radiation dose are administered. Communicate with providers to facilitate diagnostic exam adjustments. Explain procedures to patients, reassure them, and secure full cooperation. Perform intravenous peripheral catheter insertion and Point of Care Testing as authorized by a Nuclear Medicine physician.
2. Follow instructions of the Authorized User (AU) physician and authorized nuclear pharmacist for radiopharmaceutical preparation and quality control, adhering to USP standards for sterile medication and radiopharmaceuticals.
3. Determine radiopharmaceutical and dose based on established guidelines, consulting with AU physician when necessary. Calculate patient dosage when weight-based.
4. Acquire, process, and reconstruct images as appropriate. Label patient images according to hospital requirements. Archive patient data for storage. Interface with relevant computer systems.
5. Coordinate effectively between departments, staff, physicians, study PI, patients, Core, and clinical services.
6. Stay updated on developments in techniques, procedures, and equipment. Participate in educational programs and meet state requirements for continuing education. Adhere to SNMMI Nuclear Medicine Technologist Scope of Practice and Performance Standards.
Educational and licensure requirements:
* Associate's Degree in medical imaging required; Bachelor's preferred.
* Applicable state licensure - Radiologic technologist (Nuclear Medicine) required.
* ARRT or NMTCB (NM) certification required.
* ARRT or NMTCB (CT) certification within 1 year.
* BLS certification preferred.
