Position Classification: Staff Specialist - Visiting Medical Officer - Consultation‑Liaison

The position is primarily based at the Nepean Hospital campus and involves consultation and liaison with Nepean Hospital and associated outpatient clinics. Applicants who will be eligible for Fellowship within 4 months and who have no more than one College‑administered assessment to complete may be considered; if successful, the appointment will not commence until all qualifications and requirements are formally completed. Successful applicants also participate in a District‑wide after‑hours roster.

This substantive role contributes to an interdisciplinary team that delivers timely, need‑adapted care to patients presenting to the general hospital and physical health settings. The successful applicant works with the CL team to improve collaboration between mental health and other hospital services, contributes team expertise across therapeutic modalities, and participates in key clinical decisions. There is an opportunity to develop leadership qualities. The Mental Health Service’s vision is that “All people of our District will be supported to live well in the community on their own terms.”

Qualifications and selection criteria

Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZP) or equivalent.

Current NSW driver’s licence and demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development and reflective practice.

Demonstrated expertise and experience providing high‑quality mental health services in a psychiatric setting, with person‑centred, recovery‑oriented, family‑inclusive, trauma‑informed and need‑adapted principles of care.

Ability to collaborate in interprofessional contexts, including lived‑experience professionals, with sound knowledge of psychiatry encompassing biological, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual domains.

High level verbal and written communication skills, including capacity to communicate clearly, inclusively and respectfully.

Experience and commitment to teaching and supervision of medical staff, non‑medical colleagues and students, consistent with contemporary best practice.

High ethical and professional standards, and evidence of quality improvement and clinical governance activities.

Familiarity with clinical research and ability to appraise evidence, guidelines and quality improvement activities.

Conditions of appointment align with the Health Services Act 1997 and relevant awards or determinations. Employees and contractors must abide by the NSW Health Code of Conduct and hold a Working with Children Check (WWCC).
