About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) manages Australia's international relations, trade, and diplomatic engagement across the world. To support these operations, DFAT relies on a secure and highly sophisticated ICT environment enabling global communications and collaboration, delivery of digital services, and enterprise applications used across Australia and overseas missions. DFAT's Information Management and Technology Division (IMTD) delivers the enterprise platforms, infrastructure, and digital services that support these operations globally.
Role and Responsibilities
The Test Lead will provide leadership and coordination across testing activities supporting DFAT ICT programs. This role is responsible for defining testing strategies, managing testing delivery, and ensuring quality assurance standards are consistently applied across complex ICT initiatives. You will work closely with project managers, developers, test analysts, and business stakeholders to ensure solutions meet defined acceptance criteria prior to production release. The role also contributes to improving testing governance, processes, and quality standards across the department. As the Test Lead, you will oversee testing activities and ensure high quality outcomes across ICT projects.
Responsibilities include:
* Developing and implementing testing strategies and test plans
* Leading and coordinating testing teams across delivery programs
* Managing testing schedules, resources, and deliverables
* Identifying testing risks and mitigation strategies
* Monitoring testing progress and providing status reporting
* Managing defect identification, prioritisation, and resolution
* Supporting User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and stakeholder engagement
* Ensuring systems meet quality and acceptance criteria before production deployment
* Providing expert advice on testing methodologies and QA best practices
* The Test Lead will oversee the full testing lifecycle
* Developing comprehensive test strategies and plans
* Coordinating system, integration, and acceptance testing
* Managing test environments and execution schedules
* Maintaining testing artefacts and documentation
* Reporting on quality metrics, risks, and progress
Testing will be performed across a variety of enterprise platforms and applications, including:
* Testing Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) solutions and bespoke applications
* Testing web applications and enterprise platforms
* Testing REST APIs and SOAP web services
* Managing testing using Azure DevOps or similar platforms
* Supporting testing within cloud-based enterprise ICT environments
The Test Lead will collaborate with stakeholders across DFAT including:
* Test Analysts and QA teams
* Business stakeholders and subject matter experts
* ICT governance and assurance teams
Strong communication and leadership skills will be essential to ensure testing activities are coordinated effectively across delivery teams.
Qualifications
* ISTQB Foundation certification or higher
* 8+ years of experience in software or system testing
* Experience leading or coordinating testing across ICT projects
* Experience developing test strategies and testing frameworks
* Experience with Azure DevOps or similar test management tools
* Experience testing web applications and enterprise systems
* Experience testing REST APIs and SOAP web services
* Strong leadership and stakeholder engagement skills
* Strong analytical and problem-solving capability
* Active NV1 Security Clearance
Highly regarded experience includes:
* Salesforce or low-code platform testing
* Cloud-hosted systems and CI/CD pipelines
* MOE or infrastructure testing environments
* Experience within Australian Government ICT environments
This role will sit within DFAT's Quality Assurance Section, which provides testing governance and oversight across ICT projects. The QA team collaborates with Commercial Applications teams, Software Development teams, and Infrastructure and platform teams. The Test Lead will play an important role in ensuring consistent testing practices across DFAT's ICT initiatives.
Contract details:
* Estimated Start: June 2026
* Extension Options: Two additional 12-month extensions
Note: This role requires full-time onsite work in Canberra. Remote or interstate candidates will not be considered.
Contractors should also be aware that DFAT typically has a December–January stand-down period of approximately 4–6 weeks when contractor services may be paused.
