About the role
A rare opportunity has arisen for a commercially astute Legal Counsel (3+ years' PAE) to take on a high-impact in-house role within a leading commercial law firm, based in Melbourne. Reporting directly to the General Counsel and working closely with the Management team, you will play a key role in shaping and supporting the firm's internal legal function. You will deliver clear, practical and solutions-focused advice across a broad range of commercial, regulatory and operational matters, helping to drive informed decision-making across the business.

Duties
1. Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements including tech, consultancy, confidentiality and procurement contracts
2. Advise on privacy, data protection, AML/CTF, sanctions, anti-bribery and conduct obligations
3. Drive governance and risk frameworks, including policies, onboarding terms and operational risk advice
4. Track legal and regulatory change and translate into clear business impact
5. Support audits, due diligence and compliance initiatives end-to-end
6. Deliver practical legal advice to Partners, Management and business teams
7. Contribute to strategic projects, process improvement and internal legal precedents
Skills & experience
8. 3+ years' PQE gained in a reputable law firm or in-house environment
9. Strong experience in front-end commercial, corporate, technology, or regulatory work
10. Excellent drafting, negotiation and analysis skills with sharp attention to detail
11. Clear communicator, able to distil complex legal issues into concise, practical advice
12. Collaborative and autonomous, comfortable working independently and across teams and stakeholders
13. Commercially astute, with sound judgement and the ability to manage competing priorities
