Senior Medical Officer • City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Workplace Location | Brisbane - North | Population Health Division is led by Queensland’s Chief Health Officer and Deputy Director‑General and comprises the following:

* Office of the Chief Health Officer & Deputy Director-General
* Communicable Diseases Branch
* Health Protection and Regulation Branch
* Prevention Strategy Branch
* Public Health Intelligence Branch
* Private Regulation, Strategy and Projects Branch

The (CDB) provides expert strategic direction in the prevention, early response and control of communicable diseases to protect the health and wellbeing of all Queenslanders.

The work of CDB is underpinned by a strong focus on addressing health inequalities, particularly for vulnerable populations and groups, and a commitment to closing the health gap for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.


Purpose of role

* To lead and provide operational specialist medical support and advice as appropriate to the Executive Director, Deputy Executive Director, units within the Communicable Diseases Branch, and as required to Public Health Units on the control and prevention of communicable diseases in Queensland, including sexually transmitted infections and blood borne viruses, health‑care associated infections, the state immunisation program, notifiable conditions, and other communicable diseases.
* To provide clinical leadership and strategic advice for the development and implementation of state‑wide programmes and guidelines related to communicable disease prevention and control, consistent with national and international best practice.
* To manage the relationship between the Department of Health and key stakeholders, including Hospital and Health Services (HHSs), and where appropriate interjurisdictional health authorities, and other state and federal government agencies, in relation to communicable disease prevention and control activities.


Your key responsibilities

* Adhere to defined service quality standards, health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services, and workplaces.
* Fulfil the accountabilities of this role in accordance with Queensland Health’s core values, as outlined above.
* Represent Queensland Health in local, state, and where required national forums and working groups, in the development and implementation of national strategies, policies and guidelines addressing communicable diseases.
* Develop and manage, in collaboration with key stakeholders, delivery and performance monitoring of state‑wide public health programmes.
* Provide specialist medical advice in the development of contemporary evidence‑based policy, protocols, and other essential resources for state‑wide communicable disease priorities.
* As an authorised Human Biosecurity Officer, monitor and enforce public health standards and regulations in accordance with Biosecurity Act 2015. Participate in high‑level negotiation and consultative communication with government and non‑government agencies and service providers, community interest groups and stakeholders as required.
* Identify significant risks and implement risk mitigation strategies through consultation with staff and external stakeholders including other government departments and non‑government organisations.
* Maintain sound current knowledge of research and national and international approaches to communicable disease issues.


Vaccine preventable diseases requirements

* It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis B and TB.
