The opportunity

We're looking for a compassionate, highly skilled Nurse Counsellor to support people and families navigating the challenges of a cancer diagnosis, treatment, and life beyond cancer. In this rewarding role, you'll provide emotional support, therapeutic counselling, clinical guidance, and health education to help patients feel understood, empowered, and cared for at every step.

As part of our dedicated Supportive Care team, you'll deliver high-quality, evidence-based counselling while collaborating to shape innovative supportive-care services. Your expertise will be valued and your impact felt daily by the people you help.

This is a full-time position based in Subiaco.

What you'll be doing:


• Deliver high-quality, timely counselling to patients and families affected by cancer.


• Use both brief interventions and deeper therapeutic approaches tailored to individual needs.


• Offer psychological and emotional support to help clients navigate diagnosis, treatment decisions, and the challenges of living with cancer.


• Develop and adapt care plans aligned with clients' goals.


• Identify when escalation is required and facilitate appropriate referrals through established pathways.


• Connect clients and carers with supportive services, ensuring referrals are timely, accurate, and appropriate.


• Advocate for clients to ensure their needs are understood and met.


• Liaise with oncologists, nurses, psychologists, and allied health professionals to ensure coordinated, patient-centred care.


• Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.


• Contribute to a positive and constructive experience for key stakeholders and referrers.


• Deliver culturally safe, respectful care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.


• Complete professional, accurate documentation and call records.


• Ensure personal information is handled in line with privacy and organisational requirements.


• Participate in data collection, health outcomes reporting, evaluation, and continuous improvement activities.


• Engage in professional networks to stay current with best practice and inspire innovation.


• Seek ongoing learning and maintain up-to-date qualifications relevant to the role.


• Provide professional supervision to our internal staff working directly with clients.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will need:


• Registered Nurse with current AHPRA registration, plus at least 5 years' post-graduate experience, including a minimum of 2 years in oncology, haematology, palliative care, or cancer control within the past 5 years.


• Postgraduate qualification in counselling via phone and face-to-face.


• Experience in client psychosocial assessment with appropriate communication, problem-solving and analytical skills


• High level of initiative and flexibility and the ability to meet deadlines while balancing multiple priorities


• Excellent communication, active-listening, and therapeutic-relationship skills.


• Ability to work autonomously and as part of an interdisciplinary team.


• Empathetic, resilient, and committed to providing holistic, patient-centred care.


• Experience in health system navigation throughout Western Australia (highly regarded)


• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the values of Cancer Council WA
