About the Mint The Royal Australian Mint is a small government agency working within the Commonwealth Government Portfolio of the Treasury. The Mint is a non-corporate Commonwealth Entity and is listed under the Public Governance Performance and Accountability Act 2013 (PGPA Act). The Mint is also covered by the Public Service Act 1999 (Cth) (PS Act). The Royal Australian Mint makes coins and other minted products to serve the needs of the Australian economy, foreign countries, investors and collectors. We are stewards of a thriving national institution that showcases our Nations stories through the National Coin Collection, and a word class museum and gallery experience. The Royal Australian Mint creates public value through a range of coining and minting-related activities. We play a key role in sharing the stories of Australia by recognising significant anniversaries, events, organisations and cultural perspectives through coins. The Mint offers some of the most unique career opportunities within the public service, including roles such as: Coin making - polishing, laser frosting, 3D engraving, Physical Vapour Deposition hard coating, chrome plating, dies inspection and collars manufacture. Machinery - operate and maintain minting critical machines. Coin Sculpting - design coins, medals, medallions, and token, etc. Graphic Design - design coin packaging materials, exhibition graphics, etc. Engineering - technical support and manufacturing operations. About the Branch This position sits within the Museum Education & Visitor Services Branch, whose work aims to build awareness of the Mint and the National Coin Collection among everyday Australians, to educate the community on the importance of currency to our society, and to encourage people to engage with the Mint's collector coins and the stories they tell. The Museum Education & Visitor Services Branch oversees the Mint Shop and the Museum, and manages the contract of the Mint Café tenant. These are 7-day operations, open along with the building opening hours - The Royal Australian Mint is open 7 days, and our Museum operating hours are 8:30am to 5:00pm weekdays and 10:00am to 4:00pm weekends and public holidays. MEVS also oversees public programs, with large engagement activities like our 'Last Coin' (Dec 31) and 'First Coin' (Jan 1) and an annual 'Family Fun Day' that for 2026 will be aligned to the upcoming 60th anniversary of Decimal Currency. MEVS is the team responsible for the stewardship of the National Coin Collection, and the Curators and Collections Officer team not only care for and build that collection, but draw from it for the curation of our Museum exhibitions and digital programs. Works are planned for a new collection storage facility within the Royal Australian Mint footprint to ensure the National Coin Collection is well managed for future generations. The Royal Australian Mint features a recently upgraded exhibition space detailing the history of the Australian coin-making and currency journey. Our refreshed visitor experience showcases industrial design, Australian social history a Special Exhibition Gallery, as well as the Mint Shop and Café and our visitor-favourite Factory Viewing Gallery. The Museum at the Mint sees an annual visitation of around 350,000 people including visiting school groups of around 120,000. About the Role A rare and exciting job opportunity to supervise the busy weekend tourism-focussed activity at the Royal Australian Mint. The Mint features recently upgraded its Museum, Café and Retail spaces, and this new role seeks to add a Museum Weekend Supervisor to the team to ensure that we're giving our visitors and staff as much care and attention equally across the week and weekend. The Royal Australian Mint visitor experience (of Museum, Mint Shop and Café) are open 7 days a week, 8.30am to 5pm weekdays and 10am to 4pm weekends and public holidays. The Museum at the Mint sees an annual visitation of around 350,000 people including visiting school groups of around 120,000. Our future Museum Weekend Supervisor to might have a background in retail, hospitality, cultural institutions, but will definitely love leading teams and working with the public. This part-time role will be Friday to Monday. The key duties of the position include The duties of this position include: Providing onsite supervision of the Museum Host and Mint Shop teams ensuring adequate staffing or, providing coverage where staffing resources are limited. Assisting with the day-to-day activities of the Mint Shop, including delivering Museum and Education tours and completing counter sales of all numismatic and non-numismatic products. Responding to visitor enquiries and managing those escalated by Sales Representatives, striving for positive outcomes. Working with the week day leadership of both Museum and Shop teams, to ensure you are briefed on relevant changes and are prepared for upcoming weekend activities; and reciprocating on past weekend activities. Providing peer-based training and mentoring to team members to improve the quality of the customer service experience. Providing start-of-day and end-of-day planning, including roster coverage, group booking advice, shop inventory control, accuracy of receipting, accounting of daily takings and verifying the reconciliation of discrepancies. Addressing time-sensitive weekend inbox correspondence, including phone and in-person requests and issues. Making sure that they are escalated to the weekday team where necessary. Understanding workplace health and safety responsibilities and creating a safe visitor and staff working environment. Undertaking the duties of Emergency Warden and First Aid Officer.
