Our Branch
Our Financial Management and Operations team deliver accurate, timely, and insightful financial information that supports informed decision-making across Council. Through budgeting, planning, reporting, forecasting, and modelling, we help drive strong and sustainable business performance. We collaborate closely with Strategic Finance and our internal customers to continually enhance our financial systems, policies, processes, and overall financial management capability. The Role
We're seeking an Accounts Payable Team Leader to join our Payments Team. This is more than a management role, it's an opportunity to lead, inspire, and elevate performance while bringing fresh ideas to a high-performing, long-established team. You'll oversee the processing of millions of dollars in payments each year, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency for Australia's largest local government. You'll collaborate closely with stakeholders across Council and work in strong partnership with the Team Leader overseeing our invoicing function. In this role, you'll champion process improvements, guide your team through change, and help shape the future of our payment operations. Success will come from your ability to lead with collaboration, drive innovation, and adapt in a dynamic environment.
Responsibilities
Lead and develop a high-performing payments team, fostering cohesion and collaboration
Manage accurate and timely processing of payments and corporate payment schemes
Ensure compliance with procurement policies, GST and PAYG legislation
Monitor key controls and report on performance metrics
Drive continuous improvement and digitalisation initiatives
Build strong stakeholder relationships and deliver exceptional customer service
Work collaboratively to support cross-training and succession planning within the team
Qualifications
Experience leading and motivating a team, setting clear expectations, providing coaching and feedback, and fostering a positive, high-performance culture
The ability to guide teams through organisational change with clarity and resilience, maintaining engagement and adaptability
Strong understanding of end-to-end accounts payable processes, including payment controls, reconciliations, and compliance with GST and PAYG legislation
Experience in large, complex environment. Demonstrated ability to manage high volumes of transactions using modern ERP systems (e.g., SAP or similar)
The ability to identify inefficiencies, implement process improvements, and champion digitalisation initiatives to enhance accuracy and efficiency
Capability to investigate issues, interpret data, and develop practical solutions that improve performance and compliance
Proven ability to build relationships, negotiate, and influence across all levels of an organisation, including senior managers and external vendors
Experience in building team capability through structured development, mentoring, and fostering a culture of continuous learning.
