Role Overview
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to provide engineering and project support across design review, project coordination, and process improvement at Watkins Steel. The role involves applying engineering principles to support the planning, analysis, and optimisation of steel fabrication and installation projects. The successful candidate will bridge technical engineering requirements with project delivery, ensuring compliance with design standards, fabrication processes, and client specifications.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Design & Analysis
- Apply mechanical engineering principles in the review and validation of structural steel designs, assembly drawings, and fabrication processes.
- Conduct engineering calculations and provide input on the suitability of materials, methods, and mechanical systems.
- Identify risks, inefficiencies, or potential points of mechanical failure, and recommend solutions.
- Assist with the design and modelling of components to ensure optimal fabrication and installation outcomes.
Project & Technical Coordination
- Support the Project Director in developing project schedules, budgets, and resource plans.
- Coordinate with structural engineers, drafters, and fabrication teams to ensure design intent is met in production.
- Oversee mechanical aspects of installation, commissioning, and maintenance where required.
- Ensure project milestones are achieved in line with engineering and safety standards.
Documentation & Compliance
- Prepare and review engineering documentation, specifications, and reports.
- Review architectural and consulting engineering drawings to ensure alignment with project scope.
- Maintain and monitor QA documentation, ensuring compliance with relevant codes, standards, and client requirements.
- Ensure compliance with WHS regulations and engineering best practices.
Process Improvement & Innovation
- Analyse fabrication and project workflows to identify opportunities for improved efficiency.
- Implement engineering solutions and digital tools (Power BI, AI, CAD/CAM integration) to enhance productivity.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within engineering and project delivery teams.
Communication & Stakeholder Engagement
- Provide clear technical advice and reporting to the Project Director and senior management.
- Liaise with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors to resolve technical queries.
- Support training and mentoring of junior staff and project team members in engineering best practice.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline (required).
- Eligibility for membership with Engineers Australia (desirable).
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, materials, and steel fabrication processes.
- Proficiency in CAD/3D modelling software and engineering analysis tools.
- Strong project management and coordination skills.
- Excellent problem-solving ability, with a focus on practical engineering solutions.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $80,000.00 – $85,000.00 per year
