About ELAB Consulting

ELAB Consulting is a specialist acoustic and vibration engineering firm delivering bespoke solutions that complement architecture through elegance in design. We operate nationally across environmental acoustics, building acoustics and compliance, supporting complex projects from concept design through to construction.

We are known for technically rigorous work, close collaboration with architects and design teams, and a strong research culture. Graduates are mentored directly by senior consultants and developed into independent practitioners and future leaders of the profession.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Acoustic Consultant to join our Perth team.

This is a hands-on consulting role. Acoustic engineering happens on site, in modelling software, and in direct conversation with clients, contractors and project teams. You will be exposed from the outset to real-world acoustic problems and professional judgement in non-ideal conditions.

The role includes some after-hours site work, particularly for noise monitoring. This is a normal and ongoing part of acoustic consulting. Flexibility is provided where possible to balance workload.

You may also support interstate project teams as required.

Projects You Will Work On

Projects vary in scale and sector, including:

* Hospitals and health facilities
* Residential and mixed-use developments
* Commercial offices and fit-outs
* Schools and universities
* Industrial and infrastructure-related projects

You will often work across multiple project types simultaneously.

What You Will Be Doing

* Contribute and lead acoustic design of the projects, including mentoring junior staff
* Attending site inspections and acoustic field measurements across Perth and WA.
* Environmental and building noise monitoring
* Setting up, calibrating and troubleshooting monitoring equipment
* Processing, analysing and interpreting measured data
* Assisting with acoustic reports, planning assessments and compliance documentation
* Learning Australian standards and regulatory frameworks (EPA, NCC, AS/NZS)
* Supporting senior consultants from concept design through to construction
* A valid driver's licence is required for site visits across WA
* Acoustic calculations and modelling, including:
o Environmental noise modelling (SoundPLAN)
o Building acoustics assessment and modelling (INSUL, Treble)

Research, Innovation & Conferences

ELAB has a strong research and innovation culture. Engineers are encouraged to contribute beyond day-to-day consulting, including:

* Participation in research projects and method development
* Involvement in conference work, e.g. Internoise 2026
* Development of virtual reality acoustic modelling, immersive sound environments and 3D sound spatialisation
* Exposure to advanced modelling workflows used in both practice and research

This work is ongoing and forms part of our technical identity.

About You

We are not expecting prior acoustic consulting experience. We are looking for someone who:

* Is curious about how sound behaves in real buildings and environments
* Communicates clearly and confidently
* Is comfortable engaging with clients, contractors and project teams
* Works well in a collaborative, team-based office
* Is adaptable and willing to work outside standard office hours when required
* Takes responsibility seriously and follows tasks through
* Must have Australian work rights

Suitable academic backgrounds include:

* Physics or Applied Physics
* Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering
* Audio, acoustics or signal-processing degrees
* A Bachelor's degree is required as the minimum education level for this position

What You Will Learn

* Practical acoustic measurement and survey techniques
* Noise compliance and regulatory assessment
* Environmental and building acoustic modelling using industry-standard software
* Professional judgement in real-world site conditions
* Client-facing consulting and communication skills

Why Join ELAB

* Real responsibility early in your career
* Diverse, technically challenging projects
* Direct mentoring from experienced acoustic consultants
* Clear development pathway in a niche specialist profession
* A collaborative, down-to-earth team culture that values curiosity, personality and social connection (this is not a traditional corporate workplace).
* No timesheets
* Opportunities to contribute to research, innovation and conferences
