ALDI Australia's **** Modern Slavery Statement
14/08/2023
ALDI Australia has published its latest Modern Slavery Statement, summarising the grocery retailer's efforts to safeguard and improve the rights and conditions of workers across its supply chains in Australia and overseas.
The actions ALDI has taken over the past year include:
Implementing additional training programs for its shoe and textile buying teams
Expanding its Supplier Evaluation program into housewares
Collaborating with partner organisations such as the Issara Institute and amfori to introduce grievance mechanisms in international food and non-food supply chains
Embedding its Supplier Standards into its tendering process for labour hire providers
ALDI Australia Director of Sustainability, Daniel Baker, states, "In ****, we faced one of the most challenging operating environments, with factors such as global supply chain pressures, natural disasters, labour shortages, COVID-19 impacts, and immigration disruptions exacerbating modern slavery risks.
At ALDI, we recognize our role as both a global retailer and Australia's third-largest supermarket to act ethically and responsibly across our supply chains. Modern slavery has no place in our operations, and we are committed to identifying, mitigating, and remedying any early indicators or instances of modern slavery. With the support of our supplier partners, we aim to ensure all workers, directly or indirectly employed by ALDI, work in a safe and fair environment."
Looking ahead, ALDI Australia plans to:
Extend its Corporate Responsibility Supplier Evaluation program into its seafood categories
Increase the traceability of supply chain data from its suppliers to enhance risk assessments
Review its risk assessment practices and tools for effectiveness
Expand Responsible Purchasing Practice training for buying teams
ALDI Australia also continues its commitment to sustainability, as highlighted in its "Making Sustainability Affordable" report and recent awards, including being named 'Green Supermarket of the Year' by The Finder Green Awards.
The company is phasing out plastic shopping bags, replacing them with paper bags across all stores, and has been recognized for sustainable seafood practices, winning awards in ****.
Environmental initiatives include removing nearly 2,000 tonnes of plastic packaging and achieving a 10% reduction in its fresh produce range within a year. ALDI has committed to sending zero waste to landfill by ****, with a goal to achieve zero food waste sent to landfill by ****, through expanded waste segregation, increased food donations, and closed-loop recycling initiatives.
