About the role
The Lead Landscaper is responsible for overseeing the delivery of hard landscaping projects from start to finish. This includes interpreting plans, managing materials and site logistics, leading labourers and apprentices, and ensuring high-quality construction of outdoor structural elements such as paving, decking, retaining walls, concreting, and drainage.
This is a hands-on leadership role that requires technical skills, problem-solving ability, and experience managing small teams in the field. The Lead Hard Landscaper ensures each project is completed on time, within scope, and to safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities for the role
Project Execution
Interpret landscape construction plans, site levels, and technical drawings.
Oversee and participate in the installation of:
o Paving (concrete, stone, brick, permeable)
o Decks, pergolas, screening, and other timber structures
o Retaining walls (timber, block, stone)
o Concreting works (formwork, pouring, finishing)
o Site drainage systems and stormwater components
o Excavation and compaction
Set out and mark project works to required dimensions and levels.
Ensure construction methods meet Australian Standards and relevant codes.
Site Management
Plan daily and weekly tasks in line with project timelines.
Manage and coordinate delivery of materials, plant, and subcontractors as needed.
Monitor progress and adjust workflow to maintain deadlines.
Maintain clean, safe, and organised job sites.
Identify and resolve on-site problems, escalating where necessary.
Team Leadership
Supervise and support a small team of landscapers, labourers, and apprentices.
Provide on-site training, mentoring, and quality control.
Delegate tasks and monitor performance against safety and workmanship standards.
Lead by example in punctuality, communication, and professionalism.
Health, Safety, and Compliance
Conduct daily risk assessments and toolbox talks.
Ensure compliance with WHS regulations and company safety policies.
Maintain plant and equipment in safe working order.
Maintain documentation such as SWMS, job sheets, and timesheets.
Skills & experience
Minimum 4–5 years' experience in landscaping construction.
Proven ability to lead small crews and manage site logistics.
Competency in all aspects of hard landscaping, including reading and setting out plans.
High level of skill in paving, timber construction, retaining walls, concreting, and drainage.
Ability to work to tight tolerances with attention to finish and durability.
White Card.
Current Australian driver's licence (manual).
Desirable
Certificate III in Landscape Construction (or equivalent trade qualification).
Experience operating machinery (e.g., excavator, skid steer, compactor).
First Aid Certificate.
