School

West Wallsend High School is a proudly comprehensive 7–12 community-focused school, supporting students to achieve their potential in an inclusive environment based on respect, responsibility and excellence. The school is located on Awabakal country, near Newcastle, with enrolment of ~700 students. More than 18% of students identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. The school offers seven inclusive education classes and a range of subjects and programs to support high expectations, high care and high support.

Position Information

The Department is seeking a Head Teacher English/History who will lead curriculum monitoring and assessment practices, build capacity of staff, and ensure high-quality teaching and learning outcomes for all students. The role involves leading curriculum implementation, evaluation and improvement to foster a culture of high expectations, engagement and equity for a diverse student cohort. The Head Teacher will coordinate a large and complex faculty and drive whole-school initiatives to improve student outcomes, wellbeing and engagement.

Responsibilities

- Lead curriculum monitoring and assessment practices; build staff capacity to ensure high-quality teaching and learning outcomes for all students.
- Lead the implementation, evaluation and improvement of curriculum to foster high expectations, engagement and equity for diverse students.
- Coordinate a large and complex faculty with strong organisational and management skills.
- Build and maintain collaborative professional relationships within the faculty and across the school; foster teamwork, trust and shared responsibility.
- Drive whole-school initiatives to build staff capacity to improve student outcomes, wellbeing and engagement.

Selection Criteria

Specific Selection Criteria: Applicants must satisfy teacher training and qualification requirements. In addition to the general criteria:

- Proven ability to lead curriculum monitoring and assessment practices, build staff capacity, and ensure high-quality teaching and learning outcomes for all students.
- Expertise in leading the implementation, evaluation and improvement of curriculum that fosters high expectations, engagement, and equity for a diverse range of students.
- Strong organisational and management skills to coordinate a large and complex faculty.
- Demonstrated capacity to build and maintain collaborative professional relationships within the faculty and across the school, fostering teamwork, trust, and shared responsibility.
- Experience in driving whole-school initiatives that improve student outcomes, wellbeing, and engagement.

General Selection Criteria

1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice.
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs.
3. Educational leadership skills to build capacity and manage performance of individuals and teams.
4. Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills to engage students, staff and parents.
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning.
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy.
