Key Responsibilities:
1. Specimen Reception & Accessioning:
2. Receive and log patient specimens (blood, tissue, saliva, swabs, etc.) for molecular analysis in compliance with laboratory protocols.
3. Accession specimens into the laboratory information management system (LIMS), ensuring proper documentation, sample traceability, and patient identification.
4. Assess the quality and condition of specimens and report discrepancies or issues to the laboratory supervisor promptly.
5. Communicate with clinicians, patients, and external laboratories regarding specimen transport, handling, and storage requirements.
6. DNA Extraction & Purification:
7. Perform DNA extraction and DNA purification from various biological samples (e.g., blood, saliva, tissue) using manual and automated methods.
8. Ensure that DNA extracted meets quality and quantity requirements for subsequent molecular analyses.
9. Document DNA extraction procedures, including reagent lot numbers, sample integrity, and any deviations from standard protocols in company QMS software.
10. PCR Set-Up & Molecular Diagnostics:
11. Prepare PCR reactions, including DNA templates, primers, reagents, and buffers, in alignment with established protocols.
12. Set up, operate, and monitor PCR machines to ensure successful amplification of target sequences.
13. Assist in preparation of samples for sequencing, genotyping, or other molecular assays, ensuring sample integrity and quality.
14. Support the analysis and validation of molecular diagnostics results, ensuring accurate data reporting.
15. Document results accurately and maintain detailed laboratory records.
16. Laboratory Instrument Maintenance & Robot Run Setup:
17. Perform routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment, including PCR machines, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, and other molecular diagnostics instruments.
18. Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
19. Set up and operate laboratory robotic instruments (e.g., automated DNA extraction systems or liquid handling robots) to streamline high-throughput tasks.
20. Perform regular cleaning, calibration, and troubleshooting of robotic systems, ensuring they are functioning optimally and maintaining high accuracy.
21. Work with senior staff to ensure proper use of robotic systems for sample preparation, PCR setup, and other laboratory workflows.
22. Laboratory Maintenance & Organisation:
23. Maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment, ensuring all work areas meet safety, cleanliness, and biosafety standards.
24. Regularly check inventory levels of laboratory supplies and reagents, placing orders as necessary.
25. Properly handle, store, and dispose of hazardous materials and waste in compliance with biosafety protocols.
26. Compliance and Quality Assurance:
27. Adhere to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), ISO 15189:2022, and NATA accreditation standards for quality control and laboratory management.
28. Participate in quality assurance and internal auditing processes to maintain compliance with regulatory requirements.
29. Ensure proper documentation of laboratory activities, maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of sample processing, reagent usage, and equipment maintenance.
30. Conduct quality control checks to ensure compliance with laboratory standards and regulatory guidelines.
31. Health and Safety:
32. Follow all Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) guidelines, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to laboratory safety protocols.
33. Participate in safety training, including emergency procedures (e.g., first aid, fire drills, spill management) to ensure a safe working environment.
34. Report any accidents, near misses, or unsafe practices to the Laboratory Director and Quality Manager promptly.
35. Team Collaboration & Professional Development:
36. Work closely with the senior laboratory staff and other team members to ensure smooth laboratory operations.
37. Participate in training sessions and professional development opportunities to enhance technical skills and knowledge of pharmacogenomics and laboratory technologies.
38. Contribute to a positive laboratory culture, fostering teamwork and open communication.
Skills and Qualifications:
* Education:
* Conduct quality control checks to ensure compliance with laboratory standards and regulatory guidelines.
* Experience:
* Experience in NATA accredited pathology molecular pathology laboratory, clinical diagnostics, or pharmacogenomics.
* A minimum of 6 months experience in a NATA accredited pathology molecular pathology laboratory is required.
* Experience in a pathology or diagnostic laboratory is highly desirable.
* Familiarity with molecular diagnostic techniques, including DNA extraction and PCR.
* Technical Skills:
* Hands-on experience with DNA extraction, PCR, ddPCR, the MassARRAY system, NGS and other molecular biology techniques is preferrable.
* Experience in the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment such as PCR machines, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, and other molecular diagnostics instruments.
* Familiarity with robotic systems for high-throughput laboratory processes (e.g., automated DNA extraction, liquid handling robots) is a plus.
* Knowledge of laboratory automation tools and troubleshooting skills for robotic systems.
* Compliance Knowledge:
* Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), ISO 15189:2022, and NATA standards, along with regulatory requirements for clinical molecular diagnostics laboratories is highly desirable
* Understanding of Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) regulations, biosafety protocols, and hazardous waste disposal procedures.
* Proficiency in operating and maintaining robotic systems is advantageous.
* Soft Skills:
* Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow complex protocols with precision.
* Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks effectively in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
* Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to document and communicate laboratory activities clearly.
* Ability to work independently and within a team in a regulated and fast-paced environment
Working Conditions:
* The position requires working in a laboratory environment with typical working hours. However, flexibility may be needed to accommodate urgent testing demands.
* The role involves handling biological and chemical materials and using laboratory equipment requiring precision.
* The technician will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as gloves, lab coats, safety glasses, and face shields, as required by laboratory protocols.
