Primary objective
As part of the Law Reform team, undertake project, program and policy development related to legislative reform for the
Department of Children and Families portfolio responsibilities.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Contribute to the Law Reform team through research, and consultation, liaison and collaboration with Commonwealth,
State and Territory Departments to inform the Northern Territory legislative reform agenda.
2. Manage workloads relating to multiple and complex law reform projects whilst meeting tight deadlines in an environment
that is subject to rapid change.
3. Utilise negotiation and oral and written communication skills to develop productive working relationships and
partnerships with internal and external stakeholders from all sectors and located in urban, rural and remote areas across
the Northern Territory.
4. Assist in preparing strategic advice and preparing correspondence, reports and briefings to Cabinet, Ministers, Chief
Executive Officer (CEO) and Senior Executives within the Department.
5. Contribute to strategic legislative reform projects that govern Territory-wide programs and services delivered by the
Department and assist in the management of legislative reform processes.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated knowledge of government process, preparation of ministerial briefings, Cabinet submissions and the
interpretation and review of legislation or proven transferable skills and experience in preparing other forms of high-level
documentation.
2. Excellent communication and writing skills, experience in preparing reports, correspondence, position and discussion
papers to a high standard, using research, problem solving and risk management skills relating to law reform and legislative
process.
3. Experience of research techniques, data collection, analysis and presentation of related information and demonstrated
ability to draw on information from diverse sources and user experience to analyse what information is important and
how it should be used in a law reform context.
4. High-level strategic, conceptual and analytical skills with proven ability to consult and co-ordinate issues in a complex
agency environment.
5. Strong computer literacy skills including word processing, electronic communication systems and database management.
6. Demonstrated ability to liaise and work effectively with people at all levels, and from diverse cultures.
