About The Northern Peninsula Area (NPA)

The NPA, known as the gateway to the Torres Strait, is a narrow peninsula bordered by the Coral Sea, Arafura Sea and Gulf of Carpentaria. It includes five First Nations communities—Injinoo, Umagico, Bamaga, New Mapoon and Seisia—with rich histories, languages and traditions shaped by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage. Many families trace origins to Saibai, Badu and other Torres Strait islands.

Bamaga, on the Jardine River 850 km northwest of Cairns by road, is the unofficial capital, home to about 1,050 people, over 80% identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage. Access is by road in the dry season and by air year-round. NPA is an Alcohol Management Plan community. The town offers a range of amenities including a hospital, health services, sporting facilities, IBIS grocery store, tourist accommodation and a hotel on the main street and an award-winning restaurant at the resort.

Living in Bamaga, you\'ll experience the distinctive cultural and natural landscapes of Far North Queensland.
