Position Overview
The Bureau of Meteorology is an agency in the Environment portfolio of the Australian Government. As Australia's national weather, climate and water agency, the Bureau’s expertise and services assist Australians in preparing for, and responding to, the harsh realities of their natural environment. Through regular forecasts, warnings, monitoring and advice spanning the Australian region and Antarctic territory, the Bureau provides one of the most fundamental and widely used services of government.
The occupant of this position will be required to design, develop and implement geospatial data and services, which are delivered internally to Bureau users as well as to the general public and ‘registered users’. The services are required to be interoperable with the broader environmental and spatial sciences community, including the water industry and emergency management in Australia.
The occupant will ideally have extensive experience in:
supporting spatial systems including system and user administration and executing problem and service tickets and monitoring system healththe development, deployment and management of a wide range of spatial data and services using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Enterprisespatial database management, ideally PostgreSQL/PostGISdeployment of geospatial services using open-source technology such as Mapserverusing time-series and multi-dimensional spatial data types and formatsspatial data analysis.
Role responsibilitiesUnder broad policy control and direction:
Supporting spatial systems including system and user administration and executing problem and service tickets and monitoring system healthWork in a team of Information Technology Officers, or as an individual officer, contribute to, design, develop and implement computer software and systems related to serving Bureau data as spatial data services.Provide specialist expertise in the delivery of spatial data and web services using both ESRI and open-source technology.Perform spatial data processing and analysis.Evaluate and provide advice on the application of technological advances relevant to Geospatial data systems and services.Prepare and maintain documentation, provide operating instructions and training notes, and undertake staff training where required.Commitment to APS Values and Code of Conduct and understanding of the Bureau's diversity and inclusion statement of commitment and the Bureau way.Complying with all Bureau work, health and safety policies and procedures, and take reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of employees, contractors and visitors who may be affected by your conduct.
