Barista / Café Associate: Role Overview
A Barista/Café Associate is a frontline service professional responsible for preparing and serving coffee, tea, and other beverages and food items in a café setting. This role blends customer service, food and beverage preparation, and operational tasks to create a welcoming environment for guests.
Key Responsibilities
1. Beverage Preparation & Quality
* Craft espresso-based drinks (lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos)
* Brew and serve drip coffee, pour-overs, and cold brew
* Prepare tea, hot chocolate, smoothies, and seasonal specialties
* Ensure consistent drink quality, proper brewing temperatures, and recipe adherence
* Maintain knowledge of coffee origins, roast profiles, and flavor notes
2. Customer Service
* Greet customers warmly and take orders accurately
* Answer questions about menu items, ingredients, and customization options
* Handle transactions using POS systems and process payments
* Address customer concerns or complaints professionally
* Remember regulars and personalize interactions to build loyalty
3. Food Service & Handling
* Handle pastries, sandwiches, salads, and other café fare
* Follow food safety protocols for storage, preparation, and presentation
* Maintain display cases and ensure freshness
4. Operational Duties
* Keep the café clean, organized, and inviting (tables, counters, floors)
* Restock ingredients, cups, lids, and other supplies
* Operate and maintain equipment (espresso machines, grinders, blenders)
* Manage opening/closing procedures and side work
* Monitor inventory levels and report low stock
* Adhere to health and safety regulations
5. Team Collaboration
* Communicate effectively with team members during busy periods
* Support new hires with training and guidance
