The role
As a clinician, you will be an active participant in a multidisciplinary team ideally utilising prior experience in a mental health residential/inpatient setting to conduct a range of assessments and provide therapeutic interventions and education on mental health issues to staff, clients, and family members. The role requires a strong cultural safety framework and a commitment to evidence-based practice.
You must have the ability to assess and deliver flexible responses based on the presentation of clients, drawing on skill sets and expertise to work with and provide planning with clients for future management of care including the ability to de‑escalate and manage risk at times of acuity of illness. You will be a resource for others, clients and staff. The quality of advice is monitored by the Multi-disciplinary Team and the Team Manager and is subject to guidelines and professional standards. The role may include precepting, orientating and mentoring new staff and assisting new staff as required with medication competencies.
Quality improvement activities are led by the SAF Team Manager and undertaken collectively by all Team members. You must have a sound understanding of computers and operating systems, as the role requires use of multiple databases.
The Team will be required to assist with transport needs of clients. You will need to hold a driver licence.
The Sub Acute Facility (SAF)
The Sub Acute Facility (SAF) complements and is integrated with inpatient and community based mental health and addiction medicine services provided by Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs Central Australia Region (MHAOD CAR), and other mental health recovery, rehabilitation and support services in Alice Springs. The SAF is open 7 days a week providing 24-hour care.
SAF provides 'step up' and ‘step down’ support with staff assisting mental health clients to improve the daily management of their illness to prevent either a relapse that would generally see them admitted to the Mental Health Unit (step up) or transition from the Mental Health Unit to the community (step down).
SAF can provide a 'monitoring' facility where community clients may require two to three hours post‑administration medication monitoring in a safe and comfortable workplace.
SAF provides care for voluntary clients who would benefit from a supportive period to work on recovery and self‑management of substance related harm.
The length of stay in the two‑house Facility is based on individual needs with the capacity to offer two long‑term beds for periods of up to a year or more, and a further six short‑term beds for stays ranging from a few days to 6 weeks. The SAF receives admission through referrals from the Mental Health Unit, Community Teams and AOD services.
