Job Title: Principal Legal Officer, Commercial Law
Responsibilities
The Principal Legal Officer (PLO) in the Commercial Law Section is a subject matter expert responsible for supervising and second counselling lawyers in their team.
They are tasked with personally handling matters of a more technical or sensitive nature, ensuring tasks are finalized efficiently, and driving issues forward. PLOs are adept at navigating complex scenarios through effective stakeholder engagement, clear communication, and subject matter expertise. They adopt a pragmatic approach to problem-solving and provide exceptional customer service to their clients.
PLOs lead a team by developing staff, setting goals, and driving performance through effective performance management. They delegate work appropriately and measure performance. In this role, collaboration with the three other PLOs in Commercial Law is essential for managing workflow, reporting, and contributing to team and Branch meetings.
The PLO will also work closely with Senior Executive Service (SES) to ensure appropriate briefing and escalation, as well as supporting the team.
Qualifications
Essential qualifications for the role include a degree in law from an Australian university or a comparable overseas degree recognized in Australia for admission to practice.
A Practising Certificate or eligibility to attain one is required, along with at least three years of post-qualification experience. The ideal candidate is expected to have specialised knowledge and experience in commercial law advisory work, preferably with expertise in government procurement and contracting, grants, and property. They should possess high-quality management and leadership skills for effective management and development of senior legal officers and legal officers.
Strong technical legal advice writing, second counselling, and research skills are necessary, along with sophisticated relationship management, communication, and negotiation skills to develop productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and provide excellent client service. The candidate should be able to work under pressure, be agile, flexible, and responsive to managing competing priorities and tight timeframes.
Salary and Benefits
Salary Information: The role of Principal Legal Officer offers a salary range between $157, and $177,, plus % superannuation.
The position is ongoing (permanent) and full-time, with flexible working arrangements negotiable in accordance with the Enterprise Agreement and the operational requirements of the role.

Eligibility
Eligibility requirements include Australian citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance.
