Mygration Pty Ltd is engaged by our client located in Airport West, VIC, 3042 to recruit a skilled candidate for the following position: Vehicle Painter with a base salary range starting from $76,000 - $86,000 depending on skill level + SUPERANNUATION.
Our client is seeking a highly skilled Master Vehicle Painter with exceptional expertise in automotive refinishing and custom paintwork. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in delivering flawless, showroom-quality finishes, advanced colour matching, and intricate custom artwork. You will be responsible for restoring, refinishing, and enhancing vehicles to the highest industry standards, ensuring precision in every step—from surface preparation to final polish.
DUTIES:
1. Surface Preparation
•Inspect vehicle panels for dents, scratches, rust, and other imperfections before painting.
•Remove rough spots, old paint, and corrosion using sandpaper, sanding blocks, or power sanders.
•Feather edges of damaged areas to create a seamless transition between repaired and original surfaces.
•Clean and degrease surfaces using appropriate solvents to ensure proper paint adhesion.
•Apply body filler when necessary and sand it to a smooth finish before priming.
2. Paint Mixing & Matching
•Analyze existing paint colours using spectrophotometers or colour chips to ensure accurate matching.
•Blend and mix custom paint formulas to achieve an exact match with the vehicle’s original shade.
•Adjust paint viscosity by adding thinners or reducers for optimal spray application.
•Test mixed paint on a sample panel to verify colour accuracy before full application.
•Maintain an organized inventory of paint supplies, including base coats, clear coats, and additives.
3. Masking & Protection
•Carefully mask off windows, trim, lights, and other non-paint areas using high-quality tape and masking paper.
•Use liquid masking products for intricate areas where tape may not adhere properly.
•Ensure all gaps and edges are sealed to prevent overspray contamination.
•Cover adjacent panels and vehicle interiors with protective sheeting when working on partial repaints.
4. Primer & Paint Application
•Apply primer to bare metal or repaired areas to enhance paint adhesion and prevent corrosion.
•Sand primer coats with fine-grit sandpaper to create a smooth base for topcoats.
•Operate HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) spray guns or other professional painting equipment.
•Apply base coats evenly, maintaining consistent pressure and distance for uniform coverage.
•Monitor booth temperature and humidity to optimize drying and curing conditions.
5. Detailing & Touch-Ups
•Inspect painted surfaces under different lighting conditions to identify imperfections.
•Wet sand minor flaws (e.g., dust nibs, light texture) before buffing for a mirror-like finish.
•Use fine brushes or airbrushes for precision touch-ups on chips or scratches.
•Apply polishing compounds and glazes to restore shine and blend repaired areas seamlessly.
6. Final Finishing
•Carefully remove all masking materials without damaging fresh paint.
•Buff and polish painted surfaces using rotary or dual-action polishers for a high-gloss finish.
•Conduct a final quality check to ensure no overspray, streaks, or uneven coverage remains.
7. Rust Prevention
•Treat exposed metal areas with rust inhibitors or conversion coatings before painting.
•Apply anti-corrosion sealants to wheel wells, undercarriages, and other vulnerable sections.
•Recommend rust-proofing treatments to customers for long-term vehicle protection.
8. Quality Control & Compliance
•Follow OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) standards or customer-specific guidelines.
•Adhere to workplace safety regulations, including proper ventilation and PPE (respirators, gloves).
•Maintain a clean and organized workspace to prevent contamination of paint surfaces.
•Document work processes and materials used for warranty and record-keeping purposes.
Skills & Qualifications:
•Minimum 2 – 3 years as a professional Automotive/Vehicle Painter in a high-end workshop or collision center.
•Mastery of paint mixing, blending, and custom colour matching (including tri-coats and metallics).
•Own Transport.
•Expert-level spray gun technique (HVLP, LVLP) with flawless application.
•Experience with PPG, BASF, Sikkens, or Spies Hecker paint systems preferred.
•Ability to hand-sand and polish to show-car standards.
•Strong knowledge of rust prevention, corrosion treatment, and paint durability techniques.
Preferred (But Not Required):
•Experience with paintless dent repair (PDR) or high-end restoration work.
•Denibbing and precision polishing skills
