Position Summary
The Laboratory Manager plays a key role in supporting the delivery of world‐class research within UNSW Medicine & Health, ensuring the efficient, safe and effective operation of laboratory facilities across on‐campus and UNSW‐managed sites. Working within a complex, multi‐stakeholder environment, the role provides expert operational, technical and logistical support to researchers, enabling high-quality research outcomes.
The position is responsible for overseeing laboratory operations, maintaining research infrastructure and equipment, and ensuring compliance with regulatory, laboratory practice and workplace health and safety requirements. The Laboratory Manager also supports the coordination of training, access to facilities, and the continuous improvement of systems, processes and service delivery.
Working closely with the Research Infrastructure Manager, safety teams and research staff, the role contributes to a collaborative and high‐performing research environment, providing advice on infrastructure, equipment and enterprise projects, and supporting the ongoing development of safe and sustainable laboratory practices.
Key Skills and Experience
* Relevant tertiary qualification in a scientific or other research-based discipline and relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
* Proven understanding and experience managing PC2 and PC3 laboratories (desired).
* Extensive experience in managing the operations of a research laboratory, including provision of expert technical and logistical advice on research facilities, infrastructure, equipment and instruments.
* Technical expertise in specialist areas aligned with laboratory operations and research activities, with ability to investigate, analyse and resolve complex technical, operational and logistical issues.
* Ability to provide instruction and training to others in the safe use of laboratory equipment and instruments, including safe laboratory techniques, risk assessments and safety procedures and equipment.
* Experience reviewing and advising on the development of policies, systems, procedures and guidelines relevant to research laboratories.
* Superior interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills, with ability to liaise with and influence a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
* Superior organisational skills, with ability to develop and implement operational strategies and establish priorities, using initiative to achieve strategic objectives.
