Role Purpose

The Laboratory Assistant provides part-time support to a NATA-aligned asbestos laboratory, assisting with sample receipt, preparation, documentation, and general laboratory operations. The role ensures samples are handled safely, accurately, and in compliance with ISO/IEC 17025, applicable Australian Standards, and workplace health and safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Sample Receipt and Preparation

* Receive, inspect, and log asbestos samples into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS);
* Check Chain of Custody (CoC) documentation for completeness and accuracy;
* Undertake basic sample preparation tasks including drying, weighing, sieving, sub-sampling, labelling, and storage under supervision;
* Assist analysts with preparation of samples for asbestos identification and fibre counting, in accordance with laboratory procedures;

Laboratory Operations and Housekeeping

* Maintain clean and contamination-controlled work areas in line with asbestos handling protocols;
* Clean and maintain laboratory equipment, benches, and preparation areas;
* Assist with stock control of consumables, PPE, and laboratory supplies;

Quality, Compliance, and Safety

* Follow laboratory SOPs, Quality Manual, and ISO/IEC 17025 requirements;
* Comply with WHS legislation, asbestos safety procedures, and laboratory risk controls;
* Use PPE and engineering controls (e.g. fume cupboards, enclosures) correctly at all times;
* Report incidents, non-conformances, or safety concerns to the Laboratory Manager;

Administrative Support

* Assist with the preparation of worksheets and internal records;
* Support sample tracking, turnaround time monitoring, and daily workflow coordination;
* Liaise with analysts and administration staff to ensure smooth laboratory operations;

Required Skills and Experience

* Previous experience in a laboratory, asbestos, environmental, or materials testing environment is desirable but not essential;
* Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written procedures;
* Good organisational and time-management skills;
* Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Excel and Word);
* Ability to work efficiently within limited weekly hours;

Qualifications and Training

* Certificate III or IV in Laboratory Techniques, Science, or a related field (desirable);
* Asbestos awareness training or willingness to complete training upon commencement;
* WHS induction and laboratory safety training will be provided if required;

* Reliable and punctual with a strong sense of responsibility;
* Able to work independently and as part of a small laboratory team;
* Willingness to learn and develop technical laboratory skills;
