We are seeking an experienced UI Designer / Front‐End Developer (APS6 equivalent) to join a collaborative digital team delivering user‐centric, accessible and high‐quality web solutions within an Australian Government environment.
Role overview
* Estimated start date: Wednesday, 01 July 2026
* Contract duration: 12 months
* Extension options: Up to two extensions of 12 months each
* Experience level: APS6 equivalent
* Location: ACT
* Working arrangements: Onsite
* Flexible work: Remote arrangements may be considered on a case‐by‐case basis, subject to business needs. Candidates must clearly state their preferred work location if outside ACT/Canberra
* Maximum hours: 40 hours per week
* Security clearance: Must be able to obtain Baseline (Prefer Active Clearance )
About the role
You will work closely with designers, developers and user researchers to design and build intuitive, accessible and responsive user interfaces. This role blends UX/UI design with hands‐on front‐end development, supporting the delivery of user‐focused digital products.
Key duties and responsibilities
* Define, iterate and enhance user‐centric designs based on user feedback
* Design user flows, wireframes, prototypes and high‐fidelity interfaces
* Plan and conduct user experience evaluations to ensure usability and accessibility requirements are met
* Implement responsive UI components using HTML, CSS and JavaScript
* Translate usability testing insights into practical UI improvements
* Advocate for user‐centred design solutions and collaborate closely with developers
* Coach back‐end engineers on usability and front‐end best practices
* Transform complex requirements into intuitive, easy‐to‐use designs and reusable front‐end modules
Technical skills and experience
* Strong experience building responsive web interfaces using HTML, CSS and JavaScript frameworks such as ReactJS and/or Angular
* Experience using prototyping tools such as Figma, Adobe XD or Axure (highly desirable)
* Solid understanding of design principles, design systems and style guides
* Proven implementation of accessibility standards, including WCAG 2.1 Level AA
Application requirements
Candidates must submit a one‐page pitch (up to 5,000 characters) addressing all selection criteria.
Essential criteria .
* Demonstrated experience designing user interfaces within an existing design system or style guide using HTML, CSS and JavaScript frameworks
* Strong communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders and clearly articulate design decisions
* Proven experience translating usability testing findings into actionable UI improvements
* Knowledge and practical implementation of WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility requirements
Desirable criteria
* Experience designing wireframes, interactive prototypes and high‐fidelity interfaces with strong attention to detail
* Ability to rapidly prototype, test and iterate designs
* Tertiary qualifications in design, computer science or ICT‐related disciplines (e.g. UX, HCI, Graphic Design, Psychology, Web Development)
