AEMO at the Heart of Energy
AEMO is Australia's independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO's purpose is to ensure safe, reliable, and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.
About The Role
AEMO's System Design division plays a central role in planning the power system as Australia undergoes rapid transformation. With the shift to renewable generation and widespread electrification, the number of new transmission and distribution projects is growing fast.
As a Team Lead in the Onboarding and Connections Group, you will guide the end‑to‑end process of connecting, registering, and commissioning new generators into the National Electricity Market. Over the next 30 years, almost 7 GW of new generation will need to be integrated — including onshore and offshore wind, solar, hydro, battery storage, and emerging technologies such as hydrogen.
You will oversee a diverse portfolio of projects, including a growing pipeline of inverter‑based large loads in Victoria. Your stakeholders will range from network service providers and developers to manufacturers, consultants, governments, and regulators.
Your leadership focus will be developing your team's technical capability, ensuring alignment to our connection's frameworks, and driving clear, outcome‑focused pathways that accelerate generator connections.
What You Will Be Doing
* Lead and develop a high‑performing technical team — building capability, overseeing day‑to‑day operations, and proactively managing project resourcing needs and risks.
* Provide expert technical advice and oversight across performance standard assessments, power system stability, system strength remediation, registration, and commissioning, using collaborative and solutions‑focused problem‑solving.
* Drive high‑quality, transparent and evidence‑based decision making, ensuring documentation and recommendations are clear, practical, and robust.
* Strengthen AEMO's technical collaboration with developers, OEMs, and Network Service Providers by constructively resolving project issues and championing continuous process and outcome improvements.
* Mentor, coach, and guide technical staff and project stakeholders, fostering growth, knowledge sharing and ongoing capability uplift across the team.
* Produce clear, concise, and influential written and verbal communication tailored to both technical and non‑technical audiences, helping build AEMO's reputation as a trusted partner across industry, government, and market participants.
What You Will Bring To The Role
* Relevant tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering (or another power‑systems‑focused discipline), with a strong aptitude for learning new technologies and a natural curiosity for understanding how things work.
* Demonstrated experience leading medium‑to‑large technical project teams and delivering complex, multidisciplinary projects with a service‑oriented, outcome‑focused, and pragmatic approach to problem‑solving.
* A wealth of experience in generator connection processes, including assessing and resolving generator and power system performance issues, supported by solid knowledge of the electricity industry, NEM dispatch, generator behaviour, and network constraints.
* Proven ability to navigate and resolve complex technical challenges in collaboration with diverse stakeholders, with a sound understanding of the commercial and legal factors shaping large‑scale infrastructure projects and the commercial drivers of generation developers.
* Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, accessible language for non‑technical audiences.
In Return Some Of Our Benefits to You
* Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options.
* Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.
* Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.
* Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).
* Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks, and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
