Head of Learning Area - Mathematics – Department of Education, Western Australia

This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 1, 2026. North Albany Senior High School (NASHS) is an independent public school in Albany, WA, providing secondary education from Year 7 to Year 12. NASHS focuses on helping students achieve personal excellence and engage in a changing world, guided by the motto “Care and Diligence.” The school offers Vocational, General, and Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) pathways with facilities including a music studio, performing arts theatre, and photography studio.


Overview

NASHS is seeking a strategic, inspiring, and collaborative leader to join the team as Head of the Mathematics Learning Area. This role leads a dedicated group of educators and contributes to a school culture that values innovation, inclusion, and strong community partnerships.


Responsibilities

* Provide high-quality instructional leadership to ensure excellence in teaching and learning across the Mathematics Learning Area.
* Lead the delivery of engaging mathematics education that supports all students, including those requiring additional support and those pursuing university entry or other positive post-school pathways.
* Possess the ability to teach ATAR Mathematics Methods and Specialist courses (desirable).
* Implement trauma-informed and restorative practices to create safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments.
* Embed culturally responsive practices, with a focus on supporting Aboriginal students and families.
* Model, sustain, and strengthen NASHS’ restorative culture, student voice, and sense of belonging while promoting professional growth and shared leadership among staff.
* Work with the Leadership Team to foster high-quality teaching and learning in every classroom and build partnerships with parents, carers, and the community to maintain NASHS as a school of choice in the Albany region.


Qualifications and Requirements

* Proven ability to provide effective leadership in diverse educational settings.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills to establish and maintain professional relationships and achieve outcomes.
* Professional knowledge of mathematics education and the ability to apply this knowledge to improve student outcomes for all learners, including Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with special needs.
* Ability to manage staff, and the allocation and use of physical and financial resources.
* Eligibility to work in Australia, registration with the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia, and compliance with Working With Children checks and relevant screening requirements.
* Willingness to engage with trauma-informed and restorative practices and STEM pedagogy approaches.

Eligibility

To be eligible to work with us, you must:

* Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or have a valid visa with work rights for the term of the appointment.
* Hold registration with the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia.
* Obtain a valid Working With Children Check before you start.
* Consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit before you start.
