Awanui Labs Timaru (previously known as Medlab South Timaru) is the provider of pathology services to the people of South Canterbury, serving medical specialists, hospital clinicians, general practitioners and midwives. The laboratory is part of Awanui Group, previously known as APHG, the largest network of diagnostic laboratories in New Zealand, and is committed to delivering exceptional care.
About the role
We are seeking a motivated trainee or qualified Medical Laboratory Technician to join our Core Laboratory. This is a permanent, part‑time position of 50 hours per fortnight, late afternoon/evening shift, and an excellent opportunity to gain experience, develop your skills and contribute to vital laboratory operations.
Key Responsibilities
* Barcoding, receipting and preparing specimens as they arrive.
* Entering patient and test details accurately into the system.
* Answering telephones and handling enquiries professionally.
* Working well under pressure and managing competing priorities.
* Demonstrating strong problem‑solving skills and a high level of accuracy.
* Willingness to learn new skills and adapt to changing procedures.
* Working effectively both independently and as part of a team.
* Maintaining a friendly, customer‑focused approach at all times.
* Showing initiative and being self‑sufficient in day‑to‑day tasks.
About you
* A positive and friendly approach to work.
* Compassion for others and a genuine desire to provide high‑quality care to a diverse patient population.
* Excellent customer service skills, including a high level of personal presentation.
* Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow processes accurately, even under pressure.
* Respect for patient confidentiality and strict adherence to all applicable standards.
* A Diploma in Applied Science or a Bachelor of Science would be an advantage, but not essential.
* A clean New Zealand Driver's Licence.
* Eligibility to work in New Zealand.
