Murrumbidgee Local Health District is seeking an experienced and visionary Clinical Director for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital (WWBH).
Reporting to the Director of Medical Services, this role provides strategic and clinical leadership for a high‑acuity ICU in a major regional referral hospital. You will play a pivotal part in ensuring the delivery of high‑quality, evidence‑based critical care services, driving innovation, and fostering a culture of safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
This is an exciting opportunity for an existing ICU clinician within MLHD, with strong leadership capability, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to shaping the future of critical care across MLHD.
Where you'll be working
Wagga Wagga Base Hospital is the major rural referral hospital for the region, supporting a broad case mix and providing care for communities across the Murrumbidgee.
MLHD covers 125,243 km² and provides public health services to more than 243,000 people, supported by over 5,000 healthcare staff across 33 hospitals and 12 primary health centres.
You’ll be working with a supportive and collaborative medical leadership team committed to excellence, staff wellbeing, and service innovation.
What you’ll be doing
* Provide strategic and operational leadership for ICU services at WWBH, ensuring the delivery of safe, evidence‑based, patient‑centred care.
* Oversee clinical governance, workforce management, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
* Lead and inspire a multidisciplinary team, promoting a culture of learning, respect, and collaboration.
* Contribute to hospital‑wide planning, critical care resource allocation, and emergency preparedness.
* Support education, supervision and mentoring for medical staff, and help advance teaching and research activity within the department.
* Ensure compliance with NSW Health and MLHD policies, including infection prevention, safety and mandatory training requirements.

* Balancing significant clinical and managerial responsibilities in a dynamic, high‑acuity environment.
* Managing workforce demand, patient flow, and resource constraints in a regional setting.
* Leading service improvement and innovation while maintaining high standards of clinical care and safety.
* Providing strong leadership during surge events, major incidents and other critical periods.
Essential Requirements
* Registration with AHPRA as a Specialist Intensive Care Medicine Physician (FCICM or equivalent).
* Senior clinical experience within ICU and demonstrated excellence in clinical leadership.
* National Police Check and NSW Working With Children Check (Employee).
* Compliance with NSW Health vaccination, respirator fit‑testing and facial‑hair safety requirements.
Selection Criteria
* Must be an existing Visiting Medical Officer or Staff Specialist working for MLHD.
* Registration with AHPRA as a Specialist intensivist (FCICM).
* Demonstrated leadership capability, including strong negotiation and communication skills.
* Ability to enhance multidisciplinary teamwork.
* Experience in innovative service planning and policy development.
* Demonstrated ability to coordinate and build effective clinical teams.
* Understanding of health system funding and Activity Based Funding frameworks.
* Experience in leading quality improvement initiatives.
