About the opportunity
The University of Sydney's School of Architecture, Design and Planning is currently seeking a Research Data Analyst and Web Developer to support the execution of various research activities in partnership with the Heat and Health Research Centre. This role involves working closely with Dr. Federico Tartarini, a Sydney Horizon Fellow, on his innovative research project "Beat the Heat: Advancing Our Understanding of Heat Stress and Developing Effective Sustainable Interventions to Reduce Health Risks in a Warming World."
This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in thermal comfort, human thermal physiology, and digital tool development while gaining valuable experience in research methodology and technical implementation. You will play a crucial role in developing and maintaining digital tools that serve the global research community, including widely used applications for thermal comfort assessment and heat stress analysis.
You will be expected to coordinate activities associated with research projects, monitor timelines, and ensure milestones are met on schedule. This role combines technical expertise with research acumen, requiring both analytical thinking and practical coding skills.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
* Undertake comprehensive data analysis for high-impact research publications, including contributions to international reports such as the Lancet Countdown
* Lead web application development and enhancement for research tools including HeatWatch, Sports and Medicine Australia Extreme Heat Tool, and CBE thermal comfort tool
* Maintain and develop digital tools such as pythermalcomfort and create new versions of thermal comfort and heat/cold stress indices calculation tools
* Assist in the preparation of research reports, technical documentation, and scientific publications
* Collaborate with interdisciplinary research teams and external partners
* Ensure research outputs meet rigorous academic and technical standards
About you
We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a strong technical background and passion for research-driven innovation. The ideal candidate will have:
Essential requirements:
* Demonstrated knowledge of research-focused applications and statistical analysis tools
* Proven experience with coding, data visualization, and database management
* Experience working in a research-intensive environment or similar analytical setting
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to present technical information clearly
* Strong project management skills with attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
Highly desirable:
* Background in thermal comfort, building science, computer science, public health, or related fields
* Experience with web frameworks (Python) and data visualization libraries
* Familiarity with scientific research methodologies
* Understanding of heat stress indices and thermal comfort models
* Experience with collaborative research projects and interdisciplinary teams
