About the Role
This role is residential and based in Aurukun.
Reporting to Carpenter Supervisor and the Building Services Manager, the Carpenter will provide maintenance services to Council facilities, homes and State owned infrastructure within the Aurukun community whist working with and mentoring employees within the Infrastructure Services department as well as contractors.
Key Accountabilities
* Construction and maintenance activities (primarily carpentry)
* Undertaking work to meet the needs of the Aurukun community
* Completing and submitting all relevant paperwork in accordance with Council and BAS systems, eg: daily job cards, store requests, timesheets.
* Plan works and order materials in advance to ensure works are not delayed.
* Participating in pre-start, toolbox, staff meetings, health and safety meetings and other meetings as directed by Supervisor
* Assist in the training and mentoring of local indigenous staff and apprentices.
* Undertaking work in a safe manner compliant with relevant legislation including reporting hazards within the workplace.
Qualifications, Skills and Attributes
* Certificate III in Carpentry (minimum)
* Open unrestricted Car (Manual) drivers' licence
* Demonstrated post trade experience (experience working in a remote and / or Aboriginal community is desirable).
* Experience undertaking a high level of housing maintenance and general domestic and commercial construction
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to negotiate, conflict manage and diffuse volatile situations
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team to achieve positive outcomes
* Knowledge of Aboriginal culture and customs advantageous
* Capacity to demonstrate a high level of commitment to interact positively in a remote Aboriginal community
