They design, construct, and commission complex grid-connected and hybrid projects integrating solar PV, BESS, diesel generation and HV substations for utilities, mining operators and government-backed clean energy programs. Operating nationally, with a high concentration of project delivery in WA, their commissioning group plays a critical role in bringing major clean energy assets online—safely, on time, and in full compliance with AEMO and DNSP requirements. About the Role This position will lead and execute commissioning of utility-scale solar PV and battery storage systems—ranging from 20 MW to 200 MW—across multiple Western Australian project sites. You will work across the full commissioning lifecycle: FAT verification, pre-energisation checks, live site energisation, functional testing, and final grid approval. Your role involves detailed hands-on testing of HV/LV switchgear, protection relays, RMUs, SCADA systems, inverters, battery containers, PCS and transformers. You will coordinate with engineering and site teams, OEM vendors and grid operators (e.g. Western Power or Horizon Power) to safely bring complex systems online. You’ll also be responsible for creating commissioning plans, test procedures, detailed reports and certificates. The ideal candidate is technically grounded, documentation-focused and experienced in navigating grid-tied commissioning environments. Key Responsibilities Lead the planning, execution and documentation of commissioning activities across solar and BESS projects Conduct FAT and SAT processes in collaboration with OEMs and engineering teams Oversee HV and LV energisation of plant infrastructure including switchgear, transformers and RMUs Perform protection relay testing, SCADA I/O verification, and system functional testing Execute commissioning on PV inverters, PCS, battery enclosures and control systems Manage energisation protocols and Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures in live plant environments Liaise with Western Power, AEMO or Horizon Power to complete grid compliance testing and approvals Generate full commissioning documentation including test plans, inspection reports and handover packages Identify and troubleshoot electrical, SCADA or control issues in real time during commissioning Project & Technical Scope Solar farm commissioning: 20–250 MW utility-scale systems across WA BESS integration: containerised systems (2–4hr), PCS, EMS, HVAC and fire systems HV & LV commissioning: 22–132 kV substations, switchgear, protection and SCADA Interfacing with SCADA/HMI, RTUs, and utility remote operations teams Grid compliance: AEMO R1/R2 process, Western Power and Horizon Power standards Equipment: SMA, Power Electronics, Sungrow, ABB, Hitachi, Siemens, Schneider Electric, etc. Tools: Omicron relay test sets, Fluke multimeters, insulation testers, loop testers Candidate Profile You are a highly experienced commissioning engineer with strong electrical fundamentals and a hands-on background delivering live commissioning of HV and renewable infrastructure. You’ve worked on utility-scale solar or power generation sites and are confident operating at the interface between construction, controls, and grid operators. You bring clarity, rigour and confidence to commissioning delivery. You can lead procedures, coordinate across trades and vendors, and ensure that all systems meet performance, compliance and safety obligations prior to energisation and handover.
