DVA has an insatiable appetite for data and associated insights. From ad-hoc requests for specific information to inform reporting and policy development, to cutting edge modelling to predict future trends, volume, costs, and program efficacy - data is increasingly central to everything we do.

The purpose of the Data and Insights Branch is to evolve the way the department produces and uses data, analytics and research, to underpin evidence-based policy development, service delivery and wellbeing outcomes. The branch fosters a culture of curiosity in data and research, establishing processes that enable the department to better understand and serve the needs of veterans and their families.

The Data and Insights Branch covers a broad range of work including:

* Analysing, visualising and interpreting large volumes of data to support decision-making
* Operating analytics and visualisation solutions for the exploitation of data
* Working collaboratively to support the production of high quality data products
* Manipulating multiple and complex datasets and conducting statistical analysis
* Publishing data in an appropriate, trusted and ethical manner (i.e. governance)
* Undertaking thorough analysis to provide data insights and detailed reports
* Seeking improvements to existing processes and systems.
Our ideal candidate will have excellent communication and engagement skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly to diverse audiences to build effective professional relationships and achieve outcomes. They will also have demonstrated experience leading a team or similar role and the ability to manage, develop, uplift and implement data visualisations solutions using SQL and Tableau.

Duties

* Extract and transform data to develop dashboards, visual analytics and statistics which facilitates business users’ understanding of the data, allows them to easily draw conclusions and form actionable insights for all of the Department.
* Manage the implementation of the Departments’ Data Visualisation Strategy which underpins the transition of DVA to a leading data-driven organisation. This includes rolling out best practice standards and principles and capability to ensure quality data visualisations throughout the Department.
* Analyse the current and future data visualization needs of the Department, identify skills gaps in consultation with key stakeholders, and design/source appropriate training solutions.
* Lead, plan and manage the delivery of data visualisation, projects, service enhancements, information systems and products. This includes identifying, managing and allocating resources and engaging and influencing senior level stakeholders and project teams.
* Lead a highly-trained, motivated team including mentoring, coaching and managing performance to deliver high quality outputs.
* Support and develop a culture that encourages and rewards innovation, risk taking and collaboration.
* Engage confidently with diverse external and internal stakeholders with a technical or non-technical information, strengthening relationships and communicating clearly across all levels.
Eligibility

* Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS).
* All applicants external to DVA offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a pre-engagement screening check, even if they have a security clearance. The screening check is conducted in accordance with the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework requirements.
* The successful candidate will be required obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance.

Where a non-ongoing position is offered, the role will be filled for an initial specified term of up to 23 months.

A merit pool of suitable applicants may be created which may be used to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies should they become available over the next 18 months.

Successful applicants engaged into the APS will be subject to a probation period.
