The Porgera Gold Mine will employ nearly 3,000 Papua New Guineans at full production, and over the last 30 years of life of the mine it has contributed approximately 10% of Papua New Guinea’s total annual exports.
About the role
New Porgera Limited is looking for an experienced and passionate Senior Hydrogeologist to join our team, reporting to the Superintendent – Geotechnical. In this key role, you’ll play an important part in keeping our operations safe and efficient by bringing together groundwater and geotechnical management strategies.
The role involves designing, implementing, and optimizing mine dewatering systems for both open-pit and underground operations, supported by aquifer testing, inflow modeling, and groundwater-surface water interaction studies. Working closely with geotechnical, mine planning, and environmental teams, the position provides hydrogeological input into slope stability, pit wall depressurization, drainage design, and integrated solutions to manage rock mass stability.
Responsibilities include installing and maintaining monitoring systems such as piezometers, inclinometers, and flow meters, analyzing real-time data to proactively manage groundwater pressures, and developing groundwater flow models (MODFLOW, MineDW, FEFLOW) alongside slope stability modeling tools (Slide 2D/3D, RS2/3). You will also ensure compliance with environmental regulations through reporting and stakeholder engagement, while preparing detailed recommendations on dewatering efficiency, slope stability, and hydrogeological risks for senior management.
About you
As the successful candidate you will hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Hydrogeology, Geology, or Geotechnical Engineering, with 5 - 10 years’ experience in hydrogeology or geotechnical roles, preferably within mining operations. They bring proven expertise in groundwater and slope stability modeling using tools such as MODFLOW, FEFLOW, Slide 2D/3D, RS2/3, FLAC3D, and MineDW, along with hands-on experience in high-rainfall and geologically complex mining environments.
Why Current Porgera
In return, you will be joining a world-class mining operation with the opportunity to impact the development and upskilling of our predominantly local workforce, combined with a team keen to learn and absorb knowledge.
This role is offered on a FIFO basis either from Papua New Guinea, Australia/New Zealand with a 21/14 roster on a contract basis with a highly competitive remuneration package.
