Treasury is seeking dynamic senior executives with demonstrated aptitude, leadership and collaboration skills to make a difference to Australia’s economic agenda through influential advice and analysis on economic policy.

Assistant Secretaries (SES Band 1) play a vital role in the delivery of Treasury’s purpose. You will leverage your strong leadership and collaboration skills to provide trusted and influential policy advice and analysis, including collaborating and harnessing expertise from a variety of sources, engaging with stakeholders and partners, building capability and resilience, managing priorities and high workloads in short timeframes to ensure effective and productive delivery.

You will be responsible for leading a Branch including people, governance, financial and risk management and will actively contribute to the overall culture and purpose of the Treasury by supporting the First Assistant Secretary and the Deputy Secretary / Director General.

Drawing on your proven skilled or senior executive management experience, you will be comfortable operating in a multi‑disciplinary, diverse and changeable environment.

Treasury may use this process to establish a merit pool that may be used to fill potential vacancies across all areas of Treasury, as required.

Experience

- Strong leadership skills in building and developing high performing and diverse teams.
- Well‑developed judgement and strategic thinking skills that enable you to effectively manage a number of high‑priority projects simultaneously.
- Extensive experience in managing the development and implementation of policies, programs and approaches to work that are complex and of high importance.
- Experience in providing trusted and influential advice and analysis, including collaborating and harnessing expertise from a variety of sources.
- Exceptional communication skills.
- Sound decision making skills based in administrative law principles.
- An ability to develop productive and collaborative relationships with a range of stakeholders.
- An ability to represent the Treasury and the Australian Government in a range of forums both domestically and internationally.
- An ability to operate in a fast‑paced and changing environment.

Desirable Qualifications

Tertiary qualification(s) in a relevant field including but not limited to economics, accounting, taxation, law, public policy, housing policy, delivery and/or housing finance or business and commerce is highly desirable.

Relevant experience in housing‑related issues that impact housing supply and affordability, or in macroeconomic forecasting and analysis, is desirable.

Immediate opportunities are currently available within the Housing Group and the Macroeconomic Group.

Housing Group – Assistant Secretary, Housing Finance and Delivery Branch

Closely supports the delivery of the Government’s housing agenda by providing advice to the Government on housing policy, including home ownership, social and affordable housing, and financing interventions to support increased supply of social and affordable housing. The branch supports implementation of key Government policies, such as the Housing Australia Future Fund, the Affordable Housing Bond Aggregator, Help to Buy and the 5% Deposit Scheme. The Assistant Secretary will engage with Ministers, Ministers’ offices, Housing Australia, and a range of stakeholders across and external to Government. They will oversee implementation on housing finance and home ownership programs, including legislative amendments, financial approvals, close collaboration with Housing Australia, data reporting, and governance and assurance of programs.

Macroeconomic Group – Assistant Secretary, Macroeconomy Branch

Leads a team responsible for compiling the economic forecasts for Australia, as well as producing long‑term projections for the Intergenerational Report and scenario analysis to assess economic risks and uncertainty. You will be responsible for leading a team that is critical in monitoring economic conditions in Australia, including in the labour market, and in providing advice to the Government on the economic outlook for the domestic economy. You will also play a broader role in collaborating across the Group and the department to produce high‑quality economic analysis on a range of matters, including macroeconomic policy settings and structural trends.
