Primary objective
The Vehicle Standards Policy Officer develops, improves and maintains operational policy and documentation to support the
operation of the vehicle standards and compliance sections within the Road Safety and Compliance Branch while also providing
a key operational support role to the Branch, industry and members of the public for all aspects related to vehicle standards and
safety.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide high level policy advice and support to members of the public, industry and departmental staff relating to vehicle
safety standards including imported and modified vehicles, consistent with relevant legislation, Australian and international
technical standards.
1. Undertake detailed research tasks related to vehicle standards and safety toward ensuring associated departmental
operational policy including procedural written reference information remains current and relevant toward supporting the
Department's Road Safety Action plan.
1. Responsible for the regular review, audit, update and improvement of the NT's modified vehicle "Type Approval" scheme.
2. Provide high level assistance, input and support as part of the Department's involvement with the biennial "World Solar
Challenge" and other major vehicle related events.
5. Provide high level policy input and support to the ongoing development and maintenance of NT legislation including
participating in national working groups related to the Vehicle Standards Rules and Australian Road Rules.
6. Provide timely advice and support to the Manager Engineering and Vehicle Standards including preparation of Ministerial
Briefings.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated well-developed analytical and research skills with the ability to make logical policy recommendations relating
to technical vehicle standards and safety matters.
2. Demonstrated organisational and time management skills with personal motivation, and initiative to meet competing
deadlines.
3. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and flexibly as a team member, maintaining positive collaborative working
relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders with ability to liaise and communicate directly to
Industry and members of the public.
1. Demonstrated knowledge of and the ability to be able to read and interpret relevant road transport legislation and national
vehicle standards.
1. Proven well developed information management, analytical and administrative skills, with the ability to undertake research
tasks and compile clear concise reports using personal computer applications.
1. Demonstrated understanding and appreciation of jurisdictional differences relating to vehicle standards and compliance
including challenges faced by remote areas.
1. Sound knowledge of national road transport reform objectives.
Desirable
1. Sound understanding of the heavy and commercial passenger vehicle industries.
2. Experience regarding Motor Vehicle Registry functions associated with vehicle standards and compliance.
