Rapid Response Officer Requisition Number: 1031Salary Range: $83,899.10 – 90,819.51 per annumPosition Type: Full Time, PermanentLocation: 119 – 145 Spence Street, CairnsApplication Close Date: Sunday 8th March AEST
Help keep our community safe by leading high‑risk and sensitive investigations involving aggressive animals, animal attacks and urgent compliance matters. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in fast‑paced, high‑stakes environments and can balance firm enforcement with empathy and education.
What we’re looking for We’re seeking a skilled investigator with demonstrated experience in Local Laws, animal management, or regulatory enforcement. You’ll bring sound knowledge of relevant legislation, strong investigative and report‑writing skills and the ability to interpret complex regulatory requirements. You’ll be confident handling and assessing the behaviour of dogs, cats and other animals, including using safe capture and containment techniques. Compassion, resilience and excellent communication are essential, especially when working with vulnerable community members or diffusing conflict. To succeed in this role, you’ll need a Diploma in Local Government, Certificate IV in Government (Investigations) or equivalent experience, along with a current C‑class driver’s licence. Strong judgement, the ability to work both independently and as part of a team and a commitment to professional standards will set you apart.
What you’ll be doingUndertaking complex, high‑risk and sensitive investigations, particularly involving dog attacks and aggressive or nuisance animals.Enforcing relevant legislation and Local Laws, including issuing notices, affidavits, warrants, summonses and court evidence through interviews, statement preparation, photographic and physical evidence collection.Attending emergent and critical incidents as a first responder, providing expertise onsite and liaising with external agencies.Capturing, controlling and seizing aggressive animals where required.Preparing detailed reports for prosecution, briefing Council Solicitors and attending Court or QCAT as needed.Conducting patrols, inspections and compliance activities across designated areas.Providing education, advice and emotional support to community members regarding animal management.Maintaining accurate records and ensuring all actions comply with legislation, policies and approved procedures.
