Role Overview
We're seeking a hands‐on Database Lead to own the reliability, performance, and roadmap of our data platforms. You will lead a small team of DBAs/engineers, set standards, and drive automation across SQL Server and DB2 estates. Exposure to Oracle is a strong advantage for cross‐platform initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
1. Lead day‐to‐day DBA operations; mentor and upskill the team.
2. Define database standards, guardrails, and best practices (security, backup, recovery, HA/DR).
3. Own capacity planning, forecasting, and cost optimisation for on‐prem and/or cloud workloads.
4. Engineering & Operations
5. Administer, harden, and tune SQL Server and DB2 databases (instances, schemas, security, indexes).
6. Design and operate HA/DR (Always On / Log Shipping / HADR) and backup/restore strategies.
7. Performance engineering: execution plans, indexing, wait stats, I/O and memory tuning.
8. Oversee release/change management, including schema versioning and data migrations.
9. Drive automation (IaC/scripts) for builds, patching, and routine maintenance.
10. Service Delivery
11. Maintain SLO/SLA for availability, RTO/RPO, and incident response; lead problem management and RCA.
12. Partner with application, platform, and security teams to ensure compliant, resilient solutions.
13. Support audits and regulatory/compliance requirements (access, encryption, data retention).
Required Skills & Experience
14. 8+ years in DBA/Database Engineering roles with demonstrable depth in SQL Server and/or DB2, including production support.
15. Proven experience as a technical lead or team lead (work intake, prioritisation, coaching).
16. Strong performance tuning (query optimisation, indexing strategies, execution plans, resource governance).
17. Solid understanding of HA/DR, backup/restore, partitioning, replication/CDC, and disaster recovery testing.
18. Proficiency with automation/scripting (PowerShell, Bash, Python or similar) and CI/CD integration.
19. Security fundamentals: least privilege, auditing, encryption at rest/in transit, patching cadence, secrets management.
20. Excellent stakeholder communication and the ability to translate technical trade‐offs for non‐technical audiences.
Desirable (Nice to Have)
21. Oracle administration or tuning exposure (RAC/Data Guard basics a plus).
22. Experience with cloud database services (Azure SQL, AWS RDS, IBM Cloud) and observability tools (AppDynamics, Dynatrace, SolarWinds, Prometheus/Grafana, Splunk).
23. Enterprise scheduling and DevOps pipelines (Git, Azure DevOps/Jenkins, Liquibase/Flyway).
24. Data governance and compliance experience (PII handling, retention, masking).
