Senior Environmental Scientist

This senior technical role focuses on environmental approvals, impact assessment, applied research and environmental compliance across large scale infrastructure and operational environments. You will work closely with the Chief Scientist and technical leaders to deliver high quality, defensible environmental outcomes.
About ARRC Gold Coast
ARRC Gold Coast is a dynamic and innovative resource recovery and circular economy company owned by the City of Gold Coast. It is the powerhouse behind the Advanced Resource Recovery Centre ARRC a 1.6 billion dollar state of the art integrated recycling and energy precinct. The ARRC will boost recycling capabilities enhance remanufacturing and resource recovery and generate energy from residual waste. Ultimately it will divert up to 97 percent of waste away from landfill providing a sustainable waste management solution for the Gold Coast and South east Queensland.
The Opportunity
As Senior Environmental Scientist you will provide senior technical expertise across environmental approvals, impact assessment, applied research and environmental compliance for the ARRC program. Working under the direction of the Chief Scientist, you will deliver high quality technical advice, documentation and outcomes across complex infrastructure and operational environments.
Your Key Responsibilities – Make Your Mark
Environmental approvals and impact assessment
* Prepare and deliver environmental approvals documentation for ARRC assets and projects.
* Coordinate Environmental Impact Statement inputs and supporting technical studies.
* Manage technical consultants and specialist scopes of work.
* Obtain and manage Environmental Authorities, permits and planning approvals.
* Maintain approvals registers, conditions tracking and compliance records.
Scientific and research delivery
* Deliver applied research programs aligned to ARRC objectives.
* Prepare technical reports, trial documentation and research outputs.
* Support partnerships with universities, research institutions and industry.
* Translate research outcomes into practical operational and strategic insights.
Environmental compliance and assurance
* Support ISO 14001 aligned Environmental Management Systems.
* Monitor environmental performance data and support compliance reporting.
* Assist with audits, incident investigations and regulatory reporting.
Stakeholder and regulator engagement
* Provide technical input to regulator assessment and approval processes.
* Prepare technical responses to regulator and stakeholder enquiries.
* Support community consultation and technical workshops as required.
What We Are Looking For
You are a highly capable environmental professional with strong technical judgement and a delivery focused mindset. You bring depth of experience across environmental approvals, impact assessment and compliance in complex regulated environments. You are comfortable working autonomously on technically challenging work, managing consultants and engaging constructively with regulators and stakeholders.
You are analytical, organised and detail oriented, with the ability to produce clear, defensible technical documentation. You can translate complex environmental requirements into practical outcomes that support project delivery while maintaining regulatory confidence.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
* Bachelor degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or related discipline. Honours preferred.
* Seven to ten years’ experience delivering environmental approvals, impact assessment or applied research for infrastructure, industrial or resource recovery projects.
* Strong knowledge of Commonwealth and Queensland environmental and planning legislation.
* Experience contributing to Environmental Impact Statement processes.
* Experience working with regulated sites and managing Environmental Authority conditions.
Desirable
* Postgraduate qualification or equivalent professional experience in environmental assessment, approvals or applied science.
* Professional membership with Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand or equivalent.
* Certified Environmental Practitioner.
