About the role
Band 5 - competitive package to be offered with successful candidate based on knowledge and experience.
TasNetworks is seeking a highly capable Senior Engineer - SCADA & Automation to provide technical leadership, governance, and lifecycle management of SCADA and automation systems across the transmission and distribution network. Operating as a technical authority within the Asset Owner team, you will shape the strategic direction of and renewal programs on the SCADA assets, ensuring they remain safe, reliable, secure, and fit for the future.
In this key role, you will develop and maintain SCADA standards, asset strategies, and lifecycle plans aligned with ISO 55001 principles. You will provide expert engineering oversight across capital delivery, refurbishment programs, and operational upgrades, ensuring TasNetworks' control systems continue to support a resilient and cyber‑secure network.
This role requires deep technical expertise in transmission‑grade SCADA systems, strong asset management capability, and the ability to influence stakeholders across engineering, operations, and project delivery environments.
What you'll do
* Act as the technical authority for SCADA systems, communications interfaces and control infrastructure.
* Develop and maintain SCADA asset standards, specifications, lifecycle strategies and Asset Management Plans (AMPs).
* Provide technical governance and assurance across operational and capital programs, including design reviews and approval of FAT/SAT documentation.
* Lead engineering oversight for substation upgrades, new builds and control system migrations, supporting installation, testing and commissioning activities.
* Identify obsolescence risks and define upgrade or replacement roadmaps to maintain system reliability and compliance.
* Collaborate with IT/OT and cyber security teams to strengthen SCADA system resilience and meet regulatory obligations.
* Mentor and support junior and graduate engineers to build capability within the Secondary Systems team.
About you
You're an experienced SCADA and automation professional with deep technical authority in transmission‑grade control systems. You bring strong engineering judgement, a structured approach to problem‑solving, and the ability to balance operational reliability with long‑term asset strategy.
You understand how SCADA, secondary systems, communications, and high‑voltage plant interact within a modern transmission network. You're confident developing standards, interpreting complex technical documentation, and providing governance across both operational and capital delivery environments.
You thrive in roles where technical leadership, asset lifecycle planning, and system resilience matter. You're comfortable influencing senior stakeholders, guiding project teams, and ensuring TasNetworks' SCADA environment remains secure, reliable, and aligned with contemporary engineering and cyber security practices.
Your background includes:
* A degree in Electrical, Electronic, or Control Systems Engineering (NER‑eligible).
* 5+ years' experience in transmission SCADA systems, including design, installation, and lifecycle management.
* Strong knowledge of power system engineering, high‑voltage plant, and contemporary maintenance practices.
* Experience with asset management methodologies, risk‑based decision‑making, and standards development.
* Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
* (Desirable) Experience with IEC 61850, digital substations, cyber‑secure OT environments, and CPEng accreditation.
