The Department of the Senate is seeking applications from those interested in joining the Procedure Office to fill a vacancy within the Legislative Scrutiny Unit in the position of Committee Secretary for the Senate Scrutiny of Bills Committee.
This is a non-ongoing opportunity, with an expected completion date of 30 September 2026.
The Committee Secretary leads a secretariat team undertaking complex research and analytical work, including the scrutiny of bills and legislative instruments and the drafting of committee reports and procedural motions.
The Secretary liaises with committee members, particularly committee chairs, and advises them on committee proceedings and activities. The Secretary also liaises with the committee's legal adviser, senior private and public sector representatives, academics, the media and members of the public. They are also responsible for managing the production of regular publications including the Scrutiny Digest.
Drawing on high-level intellectual, managerial and interpersonal skills, and extensive relevant experience, the occupant of this position leads their secretariat to achieve results, supports the work of the Legislative Scrutiny Unit as a whole and contributes to the legislative support functions of the Procedure Office and the corporate functions of the department. The Committee Secretary consults with the Clerk Assistant (Procedure) as required.
