Position Summary
The Department Head Counselling is responsible for coordinating, supervising, and directing services within the Counselling department. This includes establishing liaison with other college departments, external organisations, institutions, and agencies, participating on college and provincial committees, drafting and submitting institutional and ministry reports, and ensuring the department’s operations are covered during absences. This faculty position is governed by the Collective Agreement between VCC and the Vancouver Community College Faculty Association.
Duties & Responsibilities
* Program Services
o Maintain an appropriate quality of program services.
o Use best practices in Post‑Secondary Counselling Services.
o Participate in the evaluation of faculty and support staff per the Collective Agreement.
o Supervise faculty and support staff during all shifts and locations.
o Anticipate changes in faculty complement within the department and advise the Dean/Director.
o Provide an auxiliary counsellor when necessary.
o Serve on recommendation committees assisting in the appointment of faculty and support staff.
o Establish department duty and vacation schedules in cooperation with faculty members.
o Participate in meetings.
* Faculty, Staff and Student Relations
o Maintain liaison with other Department Heads.
o Convene regular faculty meetings within the department.
o Keep department members informed about college developments.
o Establish committees and delegate duties and responsibilities as necessary.
o Coordinate and delegate administrative duties to Assistant Department Heads, Coordinators I, faculty and support staff.
o Advise students on available resources (Counselling, Admissions, Student Loans, etc.) and act in liaison with them.
o Assist in resolving internal department conflicts.
o Utilise college resources to guide and assist new faculty members.
o Orient new instructors and support staff to the department.
* Planning and Development
o Maintain liaison with educational institutions, industry, commerce and government.
o Assist in staff and professional development.
o Assist in the provision and maintenance of adequate facilities and equipment for instruction.
o Advise and assist in department budgeting and planning.
o Guide the development of workshop, course and curriculum materials.
o Assist in developing instructor and student recruitment advertisements.
o Participate in ongoing program review.
* Administration
o Carry out other duties and responsibilities as requested.
o Recommend desired changes in department processes to the Dean/Director.
o Prepare, submit, and monitor the department’s budget.
o Authorize expenditure of budgeted funding by signing requisitions.
o Evaluate term and probationary faculty and support staff.
o Oversee the performance appraisal of faculty and support staff as required.
Hiring Criteria
* A Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology, or equivalent, supplemented by recent professional counselling experience.
* At least three years of counselling experience in a comprehensive community college (preferred).
* Good knowledge of community services, the public school and post‑secondary education system.
* Proven ability to work as part of a counsellor team and independently.
* Generalist skills to address the counselling needs of any student.
* Specialist skills to act as a resource to colleagues and provide specialised services.
* Theoretical knowledge and skills to provide career counselling to an adult student population.
Salary
Prorated based on FTE: $53.45 – $85.65 per hour. Starting salary will be determined by education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the VCCFA Collective Agreement. Additional allowance for department leaders follows the Collective Agreement.
