Summary We are looking for a skilled and motivated Structural Engineer with strong experience in both design and fieldwork, particularly in bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and aged infrastructure. This role requires a hands-on professional who can carry out inspections, develop bespoke remedial or replacement designs, and work closely with drafters, technical principals, and construction teams to deliver high-quality, cost-effective, and constructible solutions. You will be involved in the full project lifecycle—from site assessment to design and delivery—across projects involving steel, concrete, timber, and masonry structures. A strong understanding of Australian bridge codes, piling, wind and seismic design, and the ability to interpret and integrate data from geotechnical, survey, and hydraulic reports is essential. Key Responsibilities Plan and prepare for fieldwork, including developing SWMS, coordinating subcontractors, and ensuring safe and efficient site activities. Undertake structural inspections of bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and other infrastructure assets, capturing critical data for assessment. Review and interpret historical drawings, geotechnical reports, and hydraulic modelling outputs to inform design decisions. Carry out load rating assessments and structural analysis for road and rail bridges in line with AS 5100 and relevant Australian Standards. Assist in tender preparation and project scoping, contributing to bids with engineering insight. Support junior team members where required and foster technical growth within the team. Develop bespoke design solutions for strengthening, remedial works, or full replacement of superstructures or complete assets. Collaborate with the construction team to ensure designs are practical and constructible, and participate in constructability reviews. Liaise with the survey team to confirm RLs, levels, and other site constraints. Design a wide range of structural elements including retaining walls, signal masts, piled footings, and modular or traditional bridge decks using multiple materials. Work closely with drafters to translate design intent into clear, accurate, and coordinated drawings. Review and mark up drawings to ensure quality, compliance, and alignment with project objectives. Maintain a strong focus on design quality, while balancing cost-effectiveness and timeframe requirements. Communicate effectively with the Technical Principal, project managers, clients, and sub-consultants throughout the design process Skills and Experience Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (required) Minimum 3 years of experience in structural design, inspections, and engineering assessment Strong knowledge of bridge design, load rating methods, and relevant Australian Standards (e.g. AS 5100, AS/NZS 1170 series) Proficient with pile design, wind and seismic load requirements, and structural detailing Proven experience working with aged and deteriorated structures, and designing effective remediation or replacement solutions Able to confidently read historical documents, interpret site and survey data, and draw insights from geotechnical and hydraulic reports Proficient in working alongside drafters to produce high-quality and coordinated drawing sets Committed to upholding design quality, while managing project costs and deadlines Strong communication skills and ability to present technical content clearly in reports and meetings Demonstrated client focus with a proactive approach to problem-solving and value engineering Valid driver's licence (essential) MTM/VLine and ARTC design accreditation (preferred) RIW Card (or willingness to obtain with company support) CPEng status or working towards (desirable) RPEQ status or working towards (desirable) Experience in rail environments and working under protection (preferred) About us Operating for over 20 years, Sterling Infrastructure has developed a reputation within the Australian transport industry for end-to-end asset lifecycle services.
