The Cancer Support Officer provides culturally safe, practical support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, families, and community members across the cancer journey.
Working under the direction of the Health Promotion Coordinator– Cancer Services, the role supports access to screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care by assisting clients to navigate health and community services, coordinating referrals, and strengthening engagement with care.
The position contributes to improved cancer outcomes through client support, community engagement, and integration with Primary Health services.
ESSENTIAL
* Demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, with ability to engage respectfully using culturally safe approaches (e.g. yarning)
* Experience supporting Aboriginal individuals, families, or communities in a health, community, or social setting (paid or unpaid)
* Ability to provide culturally appropriate support and assist clients navigating health and community services
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including ability to build trust and work with community and service providers
* Ability to work as part of a team, take direction, and contribute to shared outcomes
* Willingness to learn and participate in training related to cancer support, health promotion, and systems
