Senior Legal Counsel – Diabetes Australia

Lead with purpose. Make your expertise count.

At Diabetes Australia, we're more than a health organisation; we're the national voice for 1.5 million Australians living with diabetes. Every decision we make matters. This is your opportunity to bring your legal expertise to a role that truly makes a difference.

The role: We're looking for a Senior Legal Counsel to proactively implement and administer our legal function, including advisory work under the supervision of our Chief Governance and Legal Officer.

You'll provide trusted advice across governance, contracts, employment law, intellectual property, and privacy, while managing risk and ensuring compliance. You'll also handle bequests and when needed, brief external counsel.

Location & Type:

Sydney (preferred), Brisbane, Melbourne, or Canberra

Full-time, permanent

Why this role matters: Your work will underpin programs and partnerships that improve lives. You'll help us navigate complexity with clarity, ensuring we remain a credible, independent voice for the diabetes community.

What you bring:

10+ years in commercial contract drafting and interpretation

Experience in employment law, intellectual property, and contracting (bequests essential)

Admission to practice in your State or Territory

Strategic thinking, ethical leadership, and the ability to work independently

Desirable: charity law experience

Why Diabetes Australia?

Make a real impact: At Diabetes Australia, your work directly contributes to improving the lives of 1.5 million Australians living with diabetes. Your role will be pivotal in helping us design and implement strategies that make a difference.

Be part of a compassionate team: Our values of compassion, commitment, accountability, authenticity, and collaboration guide everything we do. You\'ll be part of a team that cares deeply about making a positive impact.

Professional growth: We value expertise and innovation. With us, you\'ll have opportunities to develop your skills, contribute to projects, and grow your career in a supportive environment.

Inclusive and supportive culture: We believe in inclusiveness and community, and genuinely value diversity and cultural capability. Your voice matters, and you\'ll find a welcoming environment where every team member is valued.

Balanced work environment: Enjoy a balanced approach to working from home and the office, ensuring you have the flexibility you need.

Focus on wellbeing: We prioritise employee health and wellbeing with access to a free and confidential Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for our employees and their immediate family members.

Generous salary packaging: Increase your take-home pay by paying certain expenses using pre-tax dollars, up to $15,900 a year.

Please be advised you will be requested to complete a National Police Check; we appreciate your cooperation.

Research shows that candidates from diverse backgrounds, those living with a disability, or individuals returning to the workforce after raising children, often hesitate to apply if they don\'t meet all the criteria.

At Diabetes Australia, we are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace and are proud to be an equal opportunity employer. If you are interested, we encourage you to apply. We believe that a diverse workforce enriches our collective experience, drives innovation, and creates a welcoming environment for everyone.

Thank you.
