About The Role The Hipcamp Government and Community Relations team supports landowner partners in offering responsible and safe camping on private land. You will develop and execute legislative and political strategies across Australia to promote new regulatory frameworks for low-impact camping, caravan parks, and nature-based tourism, aiming to protect Hipcamp's marketplace. You will work with a distributed team, including members based in the U.S. and Australia.
This role requires success in influencing decision-makers, media relations, community advocacy, and managing policy campaigns from drafting legislation to implementation. You should have a proven track record in shaping policy at the council level in Australia and a deep understanding of land use, tourism, and recreation planning processes.
You are passionate about working with communities and government leaders to influence policy, and you have relationships in tourism, destination management, natural resource protection, outdoor recreation, or agriculture. You thrive in navigating political landscapes to create solutions and are a motivated, empathetic individual who inspires others.
What You'll Do Identify and execute strategic campaigns at state and local levels to support landowners in responsible low-impact camping. Build relationships with decision-makers, including councilors, planning staff, and state officials, to increase regulatory certainty. Develop partnerships with organizations such as agritourism, tourism marketing, public land managers, and caravan park associations. Represent Hipcamp in regional and statewide media; build media relationships, pitch stories, and develop a long-term press strategy. Foster relationships with landowner partners, transforming them into advocates and mobilizing them for advocacy campaigns. Use data and research to inform company policy positions domestically and internationally. Qualifications 7+ years in government relations, campaigns, or public policy with experience in council and state campaigns. Successful history in policy change, leveraging politics, elections, press, and partnerships. Experience in grassroots community organizing within political campaigns. Self-motivated, solution-oriented, and strategic thinker. Ability to build relationships across diverse groups, with existing connections in relevant industries. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Skilled in data analysis, interpretation, and stakeholder communication. Ability to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment, meeting deadlines and shifting priorities. High ethical standards, confidentiality, and integrity. Passion for outdoor access, rural economic development, and land stewardship. Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (up to 25%).
