Overview
Lecturer - Applied Mathematics at UNSW, based in Sydney, Australia. The School of Mathematics and Statistics conducts research and teaching across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. This role focuses on independent research, high-quality teaching, and active contribution to the School’s academic activities.
Responsibilities
- Actively carry out high quality and high impact research aligned with the School’s strengths, with a view to publication in influential journals.
- Work collaboratively and independently on research grant proposals to national competitive grant agencies and other funding bodies.
- Develop research collaborations within the School and with other groups on campus and/or industry, nationally and internationally.
- Disseminate research findings through seminars and conferences locally and internationally.
- Supervise Honours and Masters coursework projects; supervise PhD and Masters by research students.
- Contribute to program and course design; deliver high quality teaching across a range of mathematics and non‑mathematics courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- Participate in school activities and leadership roles; undertake administrative duties as required.
- Engage with industry and the community to develop productive relationships and industry funding where appropriate.
- Collaborate with peers across the Faculty and UNSW; mentor other staff where applicable.
- Align with and demonstrate the Code of Conduct and UNSW values.
About The Role
- Level B – $127k to $150k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading (Continuing, Full-time 35 hours per week).
- The role reports to the Head of Applied Mathematics and has no direct reports.
Selection Criteria / Qualifications
- PhD or equivalent qualification in relevant mathematical sciences.
- Demonstrated research ability in an area of applied mathematics aligned with the school’s directions.
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness and commitment to educational excellence.
- Evidence of research collaborations and capacity to conduct productive international research.
- Strong publication record in top, peer‑reviewed journals and ability to secure external grants.
- Ability to supervise PhD students and undertake required training.
- Experience in supervising students (Honours, Masters, vacation projects) and robust communication skills.
- Ability to deliver high quality and innovative teaching for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Track record of professional or industry involvement and ability to work in a team across disciplines.
- Understanding of UNSW aims, policies, and values, with commitment to health and safety.
