The RoleTassal is seeking an experienced and dedicated Hatchery Technician to join our state-of-the-art prawn hatchery facility in Proserpine. You’ll play a vital role in breeding and growing Tiger prawns, ensuring the health and sustainability of our Broodstock and delivering high-quality Post-Larvae to our farms. In this leadership position, you will directly supervise and mentor two team members.
This role is essential to maintaining broodstock health, system performance, and overall hatchery productivity during the peak operational period. This position is required from May through October, with the possibility of contract extension or permanency for the right candidate. The role therefore requires flexibility and the ability to adapt to different hatchery environments and operational priorities.
Key ResponsibilitiesOversee daily broodstock husbandry, including feeding, monitoring, conditioning, and health managementMaintain accurate records and ensure adherence to biosecurity protocolsMonitor, manage, and maintain water quality systems to ensure optimal parametersConduct routine maintenance and troubleshoot hatchery equipment and systemsEnsure compliance with operational, safety, and maintenance standardsProvide direct supervision and leadership to two team members, including training, task delegation, and performance supportWork collaboratively with hatchery teams, research staff, and external partners to support operational objectives
Role RequirementsProven background in aquaculture, preferably within a hatchery or broodstock production environmentStrong understanding of animal husbandry, water quality management, and biosecurity best practicesDemonstrated leadership ability, with experience supervising and mentoring team membersStrong maintenance skills and a proactive approach to troubleshooting technical and operational issuesMeticulous approach to monitoring systems, animal health, and compliance requirementsClear and effective verbal and written communication skillsA qualification in Aquaculture, Marine Biology, or a related field is advantageous but not essentialFull working rights in Australia
