About the Role The Farm Hand role is based at Mackay and provides field operations support to Variety Development and applied research activity. Work is primarily based on SRA farms but also includes offsite trials. Under the direction of the Field Operations Leader the Farm Hand conducts or contributes to a range of tasks to support execution of trials such as land preparation, planting, irrigation, fertilizer and herbicide application, sampling, and harvest. The position includes haul out and harvester operations and maintenance. These field operations form part of scientific experimentation, and a high level of uniformity and consistency are required to ensure accurate and meaningful trial results. Who are you? You will be very happy to ‘get your hands dirty’ in hot and physical conditions in the field and yet have the focus and attention to detail. You work well in a team and are flexible in your approach as tasks may change at a moments’ notice. In addition, it is essential that you have: the ability to conduct physical work in very hot and humid environments. previous experience working within sugarcane or other crop industries. experience operating agricultural machinery. ability to independently work safely and accurately following instruction or standard operating procedures. reliable and professional work ethic. a current Driver’s license.
